LENOVO 10099 IdeaCentre B540 no 5Ghz wifi

2017-06-10, 19:50 PM

The built in wifi nonnects only in 2.4Ghz not 5Ghz. How can I fix it?

I updated the drivers from Lenovo's site, but no joy.

I have a Hitron router capable of both types of connections.

And they work fine on other computers.

Please help.

I believe that you system came with either a RealTek  RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n or Atheros AR9485 802.11 b/g/n WiFi adapter, which only support the 2.4Ghz band, so if you want to take advantage of the 5Ghz speeds, your best option will be to invest in a USB WiFi adapter that supports 802.11ac.   They are usually described as "dual band", 802.11ac or 600Mbps and come in a variety of types and range from less than $15.00 USD, to over $50.00 depending on features, and whether they are a Chinese knockoff or name brand.

I would recommend that you spend a bit more and go with a well known brand, because they are usually built better, and are more likely to provide updated drivers should Microsoft make updates to the OS.   Cheaper knockoff generally have no support site etc. but they are cheap, so you will have to make the call.

Also, depending on your distance from the WiFi router, you may want to invest in one with a larger external antennae to boost the WiFi signal reception vs the smaller ones that barely protrude from the USB port.

Once you get a new adapter, you will need to run Setup on your computer and disable the built in WiFi adapter in the BIOS.
