Product key recovery

2017-10-20, 18:58 PM

Hello, I have an older Lenovo desktop that came with Win 8 and upgraded to Win 10 when it first came out.

I would like to re-install Win 10 and wipe the drive for a fresh copy.

How do I do this? I know I need the product key but I don't. I have read it is possible to get it from my machine some where.

Please help.

Thank you

Windows 10 should detect the the existing product key stored in the BIOS when you install it, but you have to skip by the part of the installation where it asks for the key (choose "Do this Later"), because it will be found only after the installation is complete.

How to: Perform a Clean Install or Reinstall of Windows 10

If windows is installed and up and running, but is still not not activating automatically, or you just want to know the key for future reference, you can use a utility called RWEverything to see the Product Key for Windows 10 in the BIOS.

Instructions on how to use the utility can be found in the link below under method #1

Do you know if Lenovo offers a free re-install of window 10 or do I have to buy it?

You can order recovery media from Lenovo, but if Windows 10 is still up an running on your system, you can just create a Windows 10 Recovery Drive using a USB flash drive (I would recommend a 32GB), and then use the Recovery Drive to refresh or reset your system.    You can also use the Microsft Media Creation tool to create a free installation DVD/USB of Windows 10 and do a clean installation of Windows 10, but it will not contain the Lenovo Software and drivers that came preinstalled when the computer was new.

How to: Create a Recovery Drive for reinstalling Windows 10

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_10/how-to-create-a-recovery-drive-for-reinstalling/58df9c7d-84de-4652-9952-8bac34abc6c5?auth=1

If your system is just behaving badly, you can choose to Reset Windows 10 but keep your personal files, which will reinstall the Windows 10 Operating System, but leave your personal files, in tact.

Note:  Resetting will remove any applications that you have personally installed, but if you created the recovery drive on your system, it should reinstall all the pre-installed applications that were present when the system was new.

If you do not want to save anything on your system, then you can just choose to recover from the drive, and it will wipe everything and restore the system to its factory new state.

Take Care,

Re: Product key recovery

I was scratching my head on how to recover my windows-license on my lenovo since the first thing i did was to wipe the whole disk without ever booting the pre-installed windows. Of course i don't know where all the printouts are that shipped with the notebook.

As i've learned the key is luckily buried in the BIOS respectively in the ACPI tables, *phew*.

On linux that would be a simple:

$ sudo tail -c30 /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM;echo

3XXXX-XXXXX-2XXXX-X29XX-9XX6X

If you boot any 500kb linux rescue floppy or USB image you can likely omit the sudo.

Hope that helps..

Why waste your time with linux, just reinstall Windows and the license will be automatically applied and the correct Windows version activated automatically.
