A700 CPU upgrade

2012-08-05, 16:39 PM

I have an A700 i3 cpu that i recently wanted to upgade to the i7.  I bought the cpu but each time i swap out the cpu the computer powers on but does not boot up.  Can someone tell me what it might be other than a bad cpu that i may have bought?  I would like to rule out all other options first.  the i7 cpu - i7 720QM.  and the oem was the i3 350M i believe.  I am running win7 home premium.  I have been thinking it may be the driver for the bios, but i dont cant find it in the lenovo support.  Thank you for your help.

The A700 was sold with the i7 720QM,
and there is no bios update, so it should
work, in my experience.

Unless there is a jumper or something on the motherboard,
or they used a slightly different board for i-7?

Where did you purchase? Exchange available?

your going from a 35w cpu to a 45w cpu i think the mobo might only be designed to take the 35w versions of the cpu and they use a higher Watt mobo for the other cpus

the psu is only a 120 W so unplug the hdd and dvd rom and give it a try just to see if it boots
Thx dave

Your i7 CPU is broken. You can replace the CPU to i7-720QM or i7-740QM. No software or BIOS updates needed, it must work after restart. The power supply should be 150W but MOBO is the same for all A700.

Lenovo was planning to introduce 820/840QM but due to high price and low demand they gave up. You can still find promotional materials where those CPU’s are listed.

Hi, do you know if Intel i7-920XM or 940XM will work with A700? There are good deals for these extreme editions right now and I guess it will work way better than my current i7-740QM. Thanks!

Re: A700 CPU upgrade

My A700 back in 2011 came with i3-350M just like yours and I swapped it for an i5-540M with no issues.

As others have already pointed out, there's only one BIOS version for the A700 regardless of CPU model, and before it was EOLed, there were some models sold with those i7-xxxQM CPUs. I'm afraid your i7 CPU might be broken, but you could try and test it on another machine to be completely sure, though.

However... maybe it's just that your A700 has no discrete graphics. There were models with ATi RADEON HD5650M like mine, but other models relied on Intel HD Graphics -> integrated into the CPU. The point is that your Core i7-720QM has no integrated graphics. If your A700 has no discrete graphics, you essentially end with a desktop with no graphics card.

Another potential issue might be the power brick as some models were 120W and others 150W, but I wouldn't expect that to keep the system from booting.

You can refer to Lenovo Product Specifications Reference (PSREF) document here. A700 systems appear at page 70. A comparison for these CPUs (original i3-350M, my i5-540M and your i7-720QM) can be found at Intel's ARK site, or just click here if you're feeling lazy.

Best of luck

I have i7-740QM running fine for the last 2 years with ATi HD5650M video-card, Seagate Momentus XT 500Gb hybrid HDD and 150W power supply. I thought i7 920XM fits the same socket and unless A700 BIOS doesn't recognize it there shouldn't be problems running it.

Also it is off topic but since there unlikely be any response here http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaCentre-Desktops-Home-Servers/Ideacenter-A700-wifi-Adapter-compatibility/m-p/1027233/highlight/true#M5504

I will try to ask it - have you had you wi-fi card upgraded in A700? Thanks!

Well that's 55w TDP so it will put some additional stress on the PSU and probably the CPU fan also. As for if it will work, it's a Clarksfield part on socket PGA988 just as 720QM so I would bet yes, but don't take my word on it.
