A720: After Windows 8.1 upgrade, Start Button doesn't work.

2013-10-18, 1:38 AM

After upgrading to Windows 8.1 on a Lenovo IdeaCentre A720, you cannot properly click the Start Button with a mouse. However, touching the screen works as expected.

If you put your mouse in the left-most corner of the screen, so the mouse is no longer visible, left-clicking switches between apps and right-clicking brings up the Start Button command menu.

You also cannot use the top-left corner of the screen to invoke the app-switching menu with a mouse. It never appears. However, swiping with a finger from the left-side of the screen works as expected.

It seems as though the screen is off alignment. It is preventing core features of the Windows 8 OS to be invoked with a mouse.

Please advise.

Same problem here - from what I've read it seems to be associated with antivirus when installing (specifically Avast). You may find down arrows on your live tile apps appear also - same culprit.

When you find "Down arrows" on your live tiles, that means the app needs to be re-downloaded. This happens especially when you upgrade from Windows 8.1 Preview to Windows 8.1 RTM, because the upgrade process requires the Windows 8 Store apps to be reinstalled. This is by design.

To re-download your apps, just click on the live tile with the Down Arrow and it will redownload. If it still doesn't work, you can search for the app in the Windows App Store and it will have a reinstall option.

Anti-Virus does not create these screen offset issues. This is a screen driver issue and it's actually existed since Windows 8.0 on the IdeaCentre A720. I do not have any additional A/V software installed on my computer as Windows 8.x comes with built-in A/V.

Also experiencing issues. Avast already crashed my PC to the point where it wouldn't boot. I had to do a system restore. Now my touch keys for brightness, volume etc are malfunctioning. Sometimes I get a popup that shows that brightness is being adjusted even though Im not touching it. Im going to do a system restore and roll back to 8 because 8.1 is one huge mess.

All,

Avast 2014 was introduced with many outstanding issues and your specific concern appears to be another one of many issues that the Avast team should have picked up before making Avast 2014 generally available. However, I can tell you that my Windows 8.1 Start Button does work properly and I can attest to the fact that their latest GA release (2014.9.0.2007) has fixed all the previous issues that were identified and posted at the Avast forums.

Also, since this latest version was first made available via a CNET download on 11/1/2013, it could just be that you missed that fix by just a few days. In any event, to ensure there are no conflicts when trying to update from v2006 to v2007, I would suggest the followiing:

Download aswclear and do a cleanuninstall:

http://www.avast.com/en-us/uninstall-utility

Then, download the latest Avast vesion here and see if your issue persists:

http://www.avast.com/index

If you still have an issue, you can use the Help> Support link to report your issue directly from within the Avast User Interface.

Good luck,

plsrepli

After additional research it is my belief that the problem is Lenovo based and not a function of Avast. Those experiencing the issue seem to be heavy dense Lenovo users irrespective of Avast.

Just for the record, I assume that everyone has tried to change their Start Button behavior via right-clicking the Taskbar, selecting Properties, and then going to the Navigation Tab to see how their Start Button options are currently configured because there are several options there to change its default behavior.

The Start button becomes functional if you drag the task bar to another border other than the bottom of the screen, so yes it is not a configuration issue.
