B540 DVD drive disapperared / missing

Would like to know what can one do when the DVD drive goes missing on this computer.  Would like to know if any one has faced similar problem on B 540.  Called the support line.  They said that they would send a rep to take a look.  Have read a few threads in this community about other machines missing dvd drive.  Seems like this is a common problem in lenovo machines.

Would appreciate any help or tips that one could provide to fix this.  Is this due to some of the updates from MS windows 7 causing this.  I have win 7 home premium on my desktop.

Thank you in anticipation.

Re: B540 DVD drive disapperared / missing

Hi

Welcome To Lenovo Community

We are really sorry to hear about the issue you are facing,

This is most likely a software related issue, but as a first step, ensure the drive is still recognized at the hardware level by restarting the system and entering BIOS or boot menu .  Ensure the DVD drive is recognized as one of the attached storage devices.

If the drive is not recognized in BIOS, please contact service.

If the drive is recognized in BIOS, but does not work properly in Windows:

You might try the automated Microsoft Fixit solution for CD/DVD drives here.

If you are you are technically proficient, you can also try the following to remove the affected filter drivers.

 1. Click on the Start button and type regedit in the Start Search box. Click on the located file in the Programs list.

 2. Type in your administrator password or confirmation if you are prompted to do so and click on Continue.

 3. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:

hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

Note that there may be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 3. Check that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilter values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the default data value is DVD/CDRom and the class data value is CDRom.

In the right pane, right-click Upperfilters , and then click Delete .

Click Yes to confirm the removal of the Upperfilters registry entry.

In the right pane, right-click Lowerfilters , and then click Delete .

Click Yes to confirm the removal of the Lowerfilters registry entry.

Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Hope This Helps

Cheers!!!

Re: B540 DVD drive disapperared / missing

Hey RM, there are a number of people complaining about this exact issue. I'm loathe to send my PC back if there's something we can all do to fix it.

The general issue seems to be that the drive is not always detected on a B520 or B540, and that there is also slow booting. When my system boots in 'normal' time the drive is found so it looks like they are connected.

Can you make suggestions for if it is a hardware issue? Would it be the case that you want everyone who has the issue to return their machines?

Thanks

Matthew

Re: B540 DVD drive disapperared / missing

Hi RM,

I hav tried all of what you suggest here.  Called in Service as well.  They said they will send some one.  It has been over a week now and there is no sign of any one visiting my place to look in to the issue.

what do you suggest I do?

As Matthew says here... there are a lot of people that seem to be facing this issue.  Why is Lenovo not addressing this problem?

Regards

Mahesh

Re: B540 DVD drive disappeared / missing

I haven't tried this, but I read online that if you have the Intel chipset motherboard and you install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Software, it will fix the disappearing DVD drive issue.
