B540 can't install any operating system ?

2013-04-03, 23:00 PM

Hi ALL, it’s great to know there is a place to get help…. I hope

I’ve just bought a B540 from a friend. I’ve checked on this site as he said it’s still under warranty, and the serial confirms it. I don’t quite know if it applies to my problem and a way to somehow get it up and running again, so maybe/hopefully someone could help me ?

So as said, I’ve just got my B540 and believe it or not, the hard disk has screwed up, while up-grading to windows 8. It basically tries to recover the windows operating system over and over again. I’ve opened a Dos windows and tried to look at the Hard drive but can’t see anything on it, all I can see is Drive X which looks like a temp directory windows makes to install.

Every time I try to recover windows 7 or 8 it simply starts, then says there’s a problem so windows has to recover ! Then goes into recovery mode and loops over and over again ?

Can someone advise on what I’ve done and find a way to bring her back to life….  PLEASE

Hi and thanks for the reply...

I turn the PC on and it starts to install windows. It then says after a short spell, windows can see another failed recovery and will try and recover that installation, and starts trying to recover it. It then reports, windows was unable to recover that installation then starts a new installation ? Then, reports the same thing, windows will try and recover the failed installation ...

I've tried a new install of windows 7 and 8. The same thing happens ?

I just can't do a clean install !!!

Thanks

The partition in question is on the drive in question. When I "want to go down that route" the drive disappears and is not recognised, even with the Ultimate boot CD and the likes, it just gone ! It also states I must install the device driver for the Hard disk, yet in the Bios Settings it's there ?

If I had another hard drive I'd try that one but I haven't !  The drive in question is a " 1TB Seagate Barracuda" are there any known issues you know of with that type of drive ?

It's driving me mad !!!

Thanks for the help

Thanks, BUT, nothing.... the drive disappears. Even if I try and load Seagate "discwizard" it can't find a Seagate hard disk; it's the only one installed ? Yet going into bios setup and there it is ???

Surely Lenovo have had this problem before ?

Thanks for your efforts ....

I've found a program that can see the drive !

Gparted !  It sees the disk as a whole with 2 partitions and an un allocated part of the disk. To be a little more accurate it's 100 meg system reserved, a 931 gig partition and a 1.7 gig un allocated ?

Caveman thanks for your help, once I went down the partition/format path, the old Dos magic came back to me and everything went well !!!

Win 7 installed no bother... Just got the up-grade to Win 8 now  :smileyhappy: Going by the stories in here, it can be a nightmare !

Thanks a lot for the help ....

Well Windows 8 was a Crash Bang Wallop !!! It just wouldn't install it, either the New Install, or the up-grade route !

Windows 7 has worked as it should on the B540 and everything was going very well, until I installed an up-grade from Microsoft and after a re-boot ... No Operating system found ?

So I'm back to square one...

I'm hoping the warranty is transferable ?
