Computer turns on but the display doesn't?

I have a lenovo all in one desktop computer, and for some reason it did an update or something yesterday afternoon, it switched off on its own, tried to turn it back on and the display doesn't come on and none of the hardware will turn on either. The only thing that will come on is the light coming from the power button and the computers built-in fan. I don't know why the computer won't display anything or turn any of the hardware on, I don't understand why it's stuck in a state of being on but at the same time not displaying anything. It has been nearly a full day and it still will not turn on?

Hi georgebeau,

Welcome to the Forum. I hope we can help you to resolve the issue with your machine.

At this point I would recommend you to perform a full factory reset. With the unit off, please power back on and keep tapping the F2 key. You will access to the recovery menu, selec "restore from initial backup", click "start" and accept the warning messages.

Be aware that it will delete all the data  that you had stored in your unit, but it should work without problems after doing it.

Regards.

Re: Computer turns on but the display doesn't?

Same issue happened after a Lenovo system update -

Try plugging in a monitor to the HDMI port and see if it works.  That allowed me to access my machine and diagnose.  Tried recovering from backup and reinstalling the os  no help.

Unfortunately for me,  the update (Scalar Fonts Improvement Firmware) hosed the controller in the system that controls the built in screen and it will now not turn on.  The video controller is fine,  the built in display doesn't work.  No choice but to send it in for repair.  Lenovo warranty repair is telling me waiting on parts three weeks in.

Hope you have better luck.

What part are they replacing?  The motherboard, or the display itself?

Re: Computer turns on but the display doesn't?

I have the exact same problem with my AIO 700 27ISH.   I use this machine for my business so I purchased next day on site extended service.   I have been out of commission for over a week and Lenovo Support can't (won't?) tell me when the parts will be available.  The online status for my repair ticket says the on site tech will contact me in 107 to 109 business days!

I have always been a Lenovo fan, but the last two products, this AIO (second support issue) and an X1 Carbon 4th Gen have both needed service calls to replace parts, in addition to periodic rebuilds after upgrades.   Looks to me like Lenovo needs to step up it's QC for the long run and it's support capabilities right away.   I find it incredulous that parts would not be available for a machine which is not only in warranty but also in production!

Lenovo, if you are monitoring, how about the straight goods, the truth, no matter how bad, is better than the speculation.

If you paid for next day service, they should replace the machine if they cannot get it running within a few days.

I would not let them get away with this; I'd be screaming bloody murder, and pounding on desks.

Re: Computer turns on but the display doesn't?

I'm facing a similar issue with an AIO 700-27ISH. After running the proper flash update, the built-in screen is black, no life at all. It will display on an external monitor.

Re-running the flash update doesn't help.

Also, it doesn't actually appear to run correctly. A window flashes up for less than a second with what appears to be (I captured it with Jing to look at it) proper info for flashing, and then immediately closes that and brings up a progress bar display that sits at 0% for two or three seconds and then disappears. It never says "OK".

I got a helluva deal on this, and it arrived with a cracked corner, so the deal will get even better ... but if I can't make it display again, it'll have to go back.

Anybody have any ideas?

Re: Computer turns on but the display doesn't?

Lenovo Warranty repair said that mine would have to have the display replaced.

Not the motherboard? Interesting, and useful information. Thanks!

I had the exact same experience with the upgrade.  Let us know how you get it running again.
