Lenovo B510 Boot Problem

2011-09-16, 10:28 AM

My Lenovo B510 will not boot normally today after over 4 months of intensive use. I merely get a black screen with a cursor blinking top left. I can get a boot after startup via F12 and then clicking "PO-Hitachi.... etc". What can be the problem? I am quite pleased with the B510 and thought it was a really good deal and I am pretty computer savvy, but I am stumped by this problem. Memory use is currently about 45% of 4 GB.

hey quolenovo,

when you mention that you can get it to boot via F12; does it boot into Windows? if that can be done, could you set in MSCONFIG to make the unit start in Diagnostic Mode.

See if it starts up properly if it is in that mode. Also, i would recommend updating your unit's system - http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_list.aspx?CategoryID=49334

anyway, was there any new software that was installed before this booting problem occurred?

Serge, sorry to reply so late, but I have been out of town. Yes, pressing F12 starts the boot immediately with Windows. Here is perhaps the decisive clue to the problem -- just pressing F12 does itself not work -- it still reverts to the black screen with white cursor blinking top left. I have to keep pressing F12 repeatedly and fast until the boot screen appears. Then I choose the top option PO etc. and everything is fine. To my knowledge, no special software has been installed that could cause the problem. It appears to be a boot timing issue.

I have by the way tried the diagnostics and have updated the drivers, but all to no avail. I have also tried changing the boot delay parameters in the boot menu, but no change.

from aaw7boot.log -- file supposedly from Ad-Aware, but I had not installed that program -- I get the following information:

I am going to install Ad-Aware and see if it can find an error, and if not, I will try Revo Uninstaller to see if it can rid of whatever is causing the boot problem.

Re: Lenovo B510 Boot Problem

at http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=23276 i read that  "the boot cleaner" is operative if:
This is if ad-aware has detected threats it cannot remove, so it tries to remove them at start up.

Again, the puzzle is that I did not have Ad-Aware installed so I do not know what is triggering that log file.

Whether this is related to the Lenovo B510 not booting remains to be seen.

In any case, I will run a bunch of programs to see if they find anything.

I have solved the problem, and will tell you what it was in the next posting, but first, I also need to finish up the AdAware thing, which was NOT the problem. I downloaded AdAware and installed it and it scanned the computer files finding 46 tracking cookies (normal stuff) and 1 malicious file, the AdAware.Win32.Agent.nn in c:\backup995\backup995.exe, which was put into quarantine and removed upon the first reboot that still only worked via F12 and not normally, i.e. there was a screen message of the boot cleaner, just prior to Windows starting, that that file was being removed. After the file removal, the restart still did not get the Lenovo B510 to boot properly.

Re: Lenovo B510 Boot Problem

2011-10-03, 15:10 PM

To see if any attached devices might somehow be affecting the boot, I removed the two that I had connected:

the Traveler SDHC (512 MB) card and the Kingston DataTraveler USB Stick (8 GB)

both of which were in the slots to the left of the monitor screen.

The Lenovo B510 boot functioned normally.

I then tried the boot with just the USB Stick. The boot functioned normally.

Then I tried the boot with the Traveler Camera-bought Traveler SDHC (512 MB) card (3 photos on it).

The boot failed.

Then I deleted all the photo materials from that card, i.e. all visible files.

The boot failed.

I removed that card.

I then tried two other SDHC cards that I use,

a Transcend 8 GB card from my Canon camera full of photos,

and then a new empty SanDisk 4 GB card.

The Lenovo B510 boot functioned normally.

The only thing that I can imagine is that  the 512 MB SDHC card from an old Traveler camera must have some kind of boot programming on it that blocks or shifts the boot sequence or that something on the card slows down the boot so it can not catch properly. The card has the following numbers on the back:

FSD512UIM-9-R

F648W65M4634

B-07-DD264-AGMP
Made in  Taiwan

Happy to have my Lenovo B510 functioning fully again.

A wonderful computer at an unbeatable price. Thank you!
