Lenovo ideacentre aio 520-22icb cpu upgradable?

2021-03-11, 6:39 AM

I currently have the 520-22icb F0DT with the Core i3 8100T 3.1 GHz processor on the chipset type Intel B360. I have upgraded my HDD to an M.2 storage and also upgraded the ram from 4 GB to 16 GB. So now I'm looking into swapping CPUs.

I do see there is an option for an i5 processor for this chipset and my question is can I simply swap the i3 8100T for the i5 8400T with no issues? Also, is there an i7 processor option that someone has used in this particular model?

Any info or input would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hello @Phenoxs,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Usually these machines have the processor soldered to the system board. I would suggest checking it first in order to clarify if you are able to upgrade.

Also I was able to find the processors marked as compatible (max Intel i5-8400T) with the machine if you would like to go through with the upgrade.

Hope this helps.

Hello Jack thanks for the reply! The cpu is removable and not soldered to the motherboard. Now I have seen there’s an “8th Generation Intel® CoreTM i7-8700T Processor” that’s on these 520-24ICB, 520-27ICB model as well but with the bigger displays. I did check for their chipset and it uses the B360. What usually makes processor incompatible with other models?

Hello @Phenoxs,

Thanks for the update.

Usually the BIOS is programmed to whitelist compatible CPU's. If the CPU matches the socket in theory it might work however we would usually just recommend sticking to tested parts to avoid any issues unless of course you already have the particular CPU of interest on hand and would be willing to test it out on the machine.

I'm sure other members will find that information very helpful if they would plan to do the same on their machines.

Regards,

That is weird. I performed a similar upgrade on a Dell PC. I swapped out an Pentium G3220T for an i7-4790S despite it supporting up to an i3. I don’t see any issues and it runs great. There might be no BIOS whitelist but who knows. I am going to try the upgrade myself. The results from the Dell is promising!

Saying that there is a "whitelist" for the processors is a misnomer.  The issue is that the BIOS must contain the microcode for the processor installed.  Multiple Intel processors use the same microcode (from what I can tell, different power versions: S, T and regular, of the same processor model can use the same microcode, but there are always exceptions - this doesn't help you, as you are limited by power and cooling to the T version.)  Lenovo does use the same BIOS for multiple systems (identified by using the same BIOS file name), if you identify one of those other systems using an i7, then there is a good chance that specific processor will work correctly in your   Use the 'X shape' when replacing the thermal paste.

Yeah, I have already upgraded a Dell system that way. I jumped from a 35W Pentium G3220T to a 65W i7-4790S. I used the dot shape with my Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste. Temps are looking great and computer feels new. What is messing with my head is how Dell’s cooling is better than Lenovo’s. How is a single heat pipe cooling from Dell able to beat a dual heat pipe cooler from Lenovo? I can upgrade my Lenovo one to an i7-8700T I know that.
