Windows couldn't format the partition (ErrorL 0x80070057)

Baseline :

  • Legacy HDD replaced by new HDD
  • HDD detected by BIOS
  • BIOS conf : AHCI mode; Legacy First;
  • Program Setup : Windows 8.1, and Windows 10

Problem :

  • Drive is detected by Windows Setup
  • Failed when formating partition, with message : "Windows couldn't format a partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code: 0x80070057"

First check to be sure your SATA cable is properly connected, and if you can, try a different cable.

 

If it still fails, try the following.

 

  • Boot from the Windows install Media, and at the Install Windows Screen, press Shift + F10  to open a command prompt
  • At the command prompt, type:  diskpart  and press Enter
  • Type:  List Disk  and press Enter   (this will return a list of drives installed on the system, so take note of the drive <disk number> you wish to install to)
  • Type:  Select Disk <disk number>  and press Enter
  • Type: Clean   and press Enter  (Note that this will delete any existing partitions and data on the selected drive)
  • Type:  Exit  and press  Enter  to return to the Windows Installation process and see if you can now install successfully.
