Hi Mark,

I have one question:

Why is it that difficult to cope with ICS on the K1 while the Medion P9516 (which came out a little later in Germany)

has already got an ICS update with google Play OTA?

Please try to explain the _big_ difference which for me is hard to see.....

Cheers, Jorge

Mark, I find it hard to believe you guys are having a hard time getting out ics out to us when the xoom, asus, sony tablets all have ics running already and they are working on releasing JB soon. My point is this I won't invest my money on the lenovo tablet again or recommend lenovo to anyone. I just get sick when I heard the xoom is releasing JB today and we can't even get ics. I should've just bought the Xoom or even the Sony tablet.

Well if you can afford the 150$ more, go ahead.    Things all have a price you know.   Bleeding edge tech has a price.  And keep in mind that Motorola has a tight relationship with Google which may sound advantageous in many points.   It appears here that Lenovo either didn't have knowlegable people around or were in learning process or got some hurdles from Google as a competitor (read "a non business partner of Google") or didn't put as much as budget/effort as other may have.   One thing for sure,  Lenovo are not liars.   They were slow,  not liars.

Hi,

well yes and no.

As far as I know:

-For the K1 there are 9 different OTA images with regional differences.

(CN, US, SG, JP, JP2, GE, HK, CA, IT)

- For the Medion there are 6 different OTA images with regional differences.

(AT, CH, DEN, DES, INT, SI)

So it does not really explain that there is that much difference in handling and effort between these two models.

Cheers, Jorge

Perhaps this went right over my head but as of right now the ICS release will NOT have the Google Play app store? If that is the case and we all download this version of ICS is there anyway to add the store via download from some other source?

There are ways to add the Play store back. Almost every custom Android ROM for every device doesn't include the Play store, but a file that installs it can be used after installation of a ROM can add it.

From what I understand this update will wipe all the data and aps from my tablet. How am I going to get them back with out the play store?

well put, egemme. If people who post on forums, send email, etc. just gave a little more thought to what they type, heck...they could even edit spelling errors, much misunderstanding could be avoided. I heartily concur with the assessment on price/value. I paid $279 for my K-1 late in 2011. If I could go back to that date, I'd probably have kept my Nook Tablet and waited for how to root it and keep it rooted. CM7 on my daughters older Nook Color is every bit as satisfying as HC 3.2 on my K1.

You'd probably have to root the K1 and install Titanium Backup before the upgrade and use it to backup your apps. You could copy your data over to an SD card or onto your computer with a USB cable.

After the upgrade, you will be able to restore your apps and data, and additionally, you could sideload the Play Store so that you could have it on ICS. I imagine that after the upgrade becomes available, some instructions for sideloading the Play Store will soon be written by someone.
