From what I understand this update will wipe all the data and aps from my tablet. How am I going to get them back with out the play store?

You'd probably have to root the K1 and install Titanium Backup before the upgrade and use it to backup your apps. You could copy your data over to an SD card or onto your computer with a USB cable.

After the upgrade, you will be able to restore your apps and data, and additionally, you could sideload the Play Store so that you could have it on ICS. I imagine that after the upgrade becomes available, some instructions for sideloading the Play Store will soon be written by someone.

Backup via TiBu, yes. Restore is unlikely though. I am willing to bet money that the ICS will wipe root priviledges. We will probably have a method for rerooting within a few days, but that's up in the air.

In my opinion this update is nice for the people that know how to manipulate the android operating system with root and other ways of adding the play store. That are people out there that got one of these tablets as a computer replacement and cat even load this update with out a PC. I glad this update is being sent out but I still feel that lenovo should finish the rom even if they have to take the time to make multiple roms for the different regions. The play store should be included because it cam with the tablet when it was released. Also this update should be ota and all the tablets should have the prompts on the screen to update there device. It also should install with out wiping user data and apps. Every other tablet manufacture out there has been able to do this why can't lenovo?

Anybody know if there is a way to root the K1 without wiping the tablet (of apps and data)? All of the (rooting) instructions that I've run across on xda-developer and rootzwiki wipe the tablet clean.

Thanks!

You should be able to goto play.google.com and push them to your tablet.

Your tablet is registered to your gmail account.

Do it today as a test.  Just pick some random app.

Dude, you can't start complaining when "tomorrow" isn't even over yet.  Depending on the TZ where Mark is located, he still has a few more hours.  At the time of this posting, "Tomorrow" still has 14 hours (-5 GMT) left.

We have the ICS package together - we are doing another day of testing and then I plan to provide it here for download sometime tomorrow.

Yes, this definitely could have been done better, but fact is that this is what we have and we have to work with it. Although it is unfortunate the update will wipe everything it is also optional. A PC is not needed. You should be able to download the update using the browser which is on your tablet. And you don't need root to get the Play Store. You just need to download the Play Store apk and install it.

I just bought my K1 last night used off of craigslist.  Had all the entry level options I was looking for.  I assumed I could root it and get ICS on it fairly easy and then when I came across this thread and it is possibly just hours away from an ICS update, I couldn't be happier!  Hopefully it all works out and - will be excited to try it out!  Loving the tablet so far!
