Thank you, Mark.

Yes... without root, even with a file manager and the GApps pack, there is no way to install the apk's to the System as it is mounted Read-Only.  You need Root to change the System folder to Read-Write to drop the GApps pack in there!  A little help here Mark?

Will there be an update for those of us not exactly tech savvy?

What these techie types are doing looks a little dodgy to me.

Oh weak, I didn't even think of needing root access. You seem to be right, I get "Application Not Installed" errors. Well, GApps was my only shot in the dark. I think I shall wait for people smarter than me to figure this out!

Yeah... I actually feel torn about this update: On one hand I'm excited because it's ICS... on the other I'm PISSED because Mark said we wouldn't have Google Play Store, he didn't say ANYTHING about not having GoogleServicesFramework or any of the GApps!!!

nebraskared,

In a perfect world, we would have provided  a customized ICS images aligned with all the regions and provided as an OTA.

That approach would support the more mainstream user (including myself) who uses the tablet, but isn't really into customizing it.

For a variety of reasons (constraints) we were not able to do that, but we did want to make ICS available to K1 users who wanted to customize and go outside of what the orignal Honeycomb release and included apps provided.

I've tried to note the limitations, and would suggest the average user consider staying with Honeycomb and the Lenovo supported environment.   I expect that over the next few days / week that some of these initial challenges (App store, file browser, etc) will be overcome by the more technical members of the community and a lot of the trial and error reduced to a few, more easily followed proceedures that more users can take advantage of.

Mark

Exactly.
I got the impression that we would just have to sideload Google Play.
This here is, unfortunately, pretty much unusable because I have to search for every app that I want, not to mention I won't be getting upgrades. Searching for APKs to sideload is not a sustainable solution.

Yeah, my wife is ****ing pissed at me right now for updating her K1 to ICS when it's useless.  No Google Play Store is one thing, the TOTAL LACK of GApps thus the inability to even side-load Google Play Store is TOTALLY Different.  Absolutely ridiculous how Mark conveniently omitted that fact!
