Re: Ice Cream Sandwich for Ideapad K1

ICS will not be the be all end all solution for Android. I suspect there are major issues with ICS they are still trying to figure out. When I purchased the K1 last November there were rumors flying about concerning ICS and its imminent release. With all this hype, there are still very few platforms where it is available right now.

Whether the K1 gets ICS or not, it will still remain a poorly designed and poorly supported slab.

Samsung and Toshiba have not released ICS yet - but THEY OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED WHICH MODELS WILL OR WILL NOT BE GETTING IT SOME TIME AGO.

Lenovo is not being forthcoming about the Ideapad - just the Thinkpad.  That is the greater issue.  Ideapad owners are left guessing, which is not how one of the biggest tech corps should handle such a situation.  This is not Panda Tabs or some other fly by supplier where you can expect zero support.

Lenovo should at least give a definitive answer.  If it's yes, great.  If it's no, it will upset a lot of people, but it allows them to make an informed decision as to whether they will hold on to it or move on to something else.

You all have valid points here concernng Lenovo's inconsistent status on ics, but seriously it's not that big a deal. My co-worker has the Transformer with ics and my K1 can do pretty well anything his does. I upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S2 cell to ics and beleive me, although it's always nice to get a nice new firmware, it's not that big a deal. I guarantee that a lot of you will be asking what all the fuss was when and if you get it.

Honeycomb is a decent OS; one of the main disadvantages of staying on Honeycomb is it may become orphaned.  As you probably know, HC was developed for tabs, whereas 2.x is a phone system.

As 2.x is on significantly more phones than 3.x is on tabs, that app market is fully baked and getting more ripe.  App market for 3.x is still budding.  With the intro of Ics, more devs will move on to Ics leaving Hc orphaned.  There is no guarantee Ics apps will run on an Hc tab, just as many 2.x apps don't run well on tabs.  The perfect example of this is Google's own new mobile Chrome browser - ICS ONLY.

There is a pretty good ics custom rom available for the k1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528775 for anyone willing to root their tablet. I'm using it right now and it does almost everything (except hd video) for now but development is moving pretty quick so its only a matter of time. They released the source finally so we'll see where it goes from there

Regarding source code bEing released- can you send us a link? Source code was already released by Lenovo in February.. But it was incomplete. They are actually violating GNU agreements by withholding the source code. The ICS custom ROM is full of bugs, with HD video playback issues being just one of many. But it seems to be the only ray of light in this dark Lenovo world that we are all stuck in. I how it progresses along for it to become a viable solution.

Regarding giving us a guarantee that ICS is not going to make a difference .. Please save the guarantee as the original OS in the tablet is the worst i've seen in my life!! I guarantee that a proper upgrade to ICS will make a HUGE difference to 99% of k1 owners. Hell, most of us bought the k1 on the premise we would get ICS officially in May.

Is Honeycomb really so bad? I would love to see ICS as well but Honeycomb seems like a pretty good OS to me.
As for the ICS ROM being full of bugs, it's because it's being developed by two people who presumably have jobs and other responsibilities. Given those circumstances I think they're doing an excellent job of the port.

I for one like this operating system fine. I have had my tablet since november and have little or no trouble with it. It would be nice to have the next version in it, but this one works fine for me...

Wow, still no answer on the ICS upgrade. A simple "no" would be fine. Pushing this off will not help positively or negatively. Pull up your big boy pants and commit!
