Re: Ice Cream Sandwich for Ideapad K1

2012-06-18, 18:43 PM

None of us should really expect a corporation to do what they say. It's really only about profit and loss in the end. In saying that, hopefully Lenovo realizes that because of all their broken promises, they're going to be experiencing some real profit loss, if they haven't already. This is my first post, but I've owned a K1 for months, and have been following this thread for months. Even though we have a person like Mark making an effort to answer questions and relay "information", Lenovo has failed at customer service as a whole. First the K1 was supposed to be getting an ICS upgrade, but there was no word on the date. Then it wasn't going to be getting an upgrade? Then it was supposed to be coming out in May. Then June 15th. What a poor run of things...no one with balls or honesty to give us a real answer?

Mark, I just wanted to say thank you for keeping us updated while things are worked on. I know it must be frustrating for you to see everyone bitch and moan about when when when, where where where.

I'm glad that Lenovo is doing this and I'm glad that Lenovo does NOT take the Microsoft approach and release crappy, buggy, non-ready releases just to make the 'expected release date'.

I'm also just happy to know that there will be an official ICS update, even though it's not OTA. I got a great deal on my tab at Xmas time, $279 at Staples, and they are selling on eBay for more than that, even today. When the official Lenovo released ICS update comes out, I know that my tablet purchase will be even more appreciated and worth much more than I paid for it. The tablet hardware, with the exception of no USB port, is top notch for a tablet. Sure, there are higher end tabs, but even the bloated Lenovo HC ran pretty fast, so I expect the Vanilla ICS will be even snappier.

Thank you and thanks to Lenovo for not bailing on us K1 owners. :)

-Cybie

Honestly, Cybie...do you really think we should be "thankful" for a promised upgrade? Lenovo should be held to the information that they released. It's not bitching and moaning to want to know when or if an upgrade is going to be released. It's pretty reasonable. It's actually not that big of a deal to port an upgrade that's already been released on other android devices for a long time. It's not like the programmers are having to write everything from scratch. It's their job...and they get paid well for it.

True that Cybie. Kudos!

They didn't have give us ICS. Nothing states they have to. They listened to us K1 users and ARE giving us ICS.

I'm "Thankful"!

=========================================================================================

If you understood how Android works, and the differences from Froyo/HC to ICS, you would realize that a PORT isn't a simple task. My experience with custom ROMs and whatnot on many android devices (mainly phones), a port will always have some major issue with some hardware not functioning.

So, YES, I thank Lenovo, through MARK, because he is keeping us up to date and also a very good advocator for those of us here on the forum. He's been the guy who has reported on a "community" forum, which I know isn't mandatory for him to do, but has helped because he is the guy who keeps things going for a tablet that isn't likely going to make any more money for Lenovo. They have a predecessor for the K1 that's been out for a while.

While it's taken Lenovo a while to get to this point, we have to be thankful that they haven't just dropped this Tablet for ICS development. A solid release, along with the source code expected to also be released, will open the doors to so much more with this tablet. Without Lenovo continuing on and releasing ICS, and it's source, we'd be stuck with a HC tablet, or a tablet with a 'custom' and crippled ICS release. My Tablet has ICS/CM9 on it. It's got issues. This will fix those issues as the dev needs ICS source. HD Video being the major issue.

Unlike Windows upgrades (From Win95 through Win 2008), ICS is a truly updated OS and requires hardware drivers to be updated as well. Android/Linux drivers are embedded in the kernel, therefore, not something where you can download the latest drivers like you do with Windows.Windows has never been upgraded since 95, just "enhanced". ICS is an UPGRADE!

I hope that people on here can learn to appreaciate the efforts because positive feedback to any company about their support, however large or small, will help keep them going knowing they are making happy customers and customers that will bo more likely to buy their future products.

So, if you just want a PORT, instead of a GROUND UP ICS update, go to XDA and get it. Good luck on things not working due to no ICS Source. I know, first hand, that PORTs aren't up to par.

Invisibl, why not offer your expert services to them to help get it out?

I've been happy with my K1 since I got it, and from what others are saying, it will be better come ICS.

If you have read back a page or two, Mark stated that they identified an issue with the versioning.

Once they get that correct, then it should come out.  You've gone this long without it, what is a few more days.

Is there a compelling reason why YOU have to have it so badly?

(This may not be part of your post) In regards to the P/L of Lenovo, they already have your money.  They are spending money to get you software that will make your investment last longer.

Mark, THANK YOU for keeping us informed.

Many people on here did not buy a 300.000 or less reject tablet. If you did good for you. Many of us chose this tab based on the name backing it. I wish that I had chosen one of the other tabs now knowing that I cant use any usb devices with it and it is already at the end of its life. If I had paid 300.00 and knew that it was the **bleep** child of Lenovo before buying it I would not be "bitching and moaning" about anything.

Looks like some people will not cool down until they get their "Ice Cream".

@MrPeter and everyone else who thinks that Lenovo is not obligated to give us ICS:

I will remind you that, when this tablet was in stores/available for sale, it was satated in no unclear terms on Lenovo's website that one could upgrade the tab to Android 4.0. And don't come back and tell me "that means it has the ability to be upgraded, not that there's an upgrade hurrr durr"

I would show you that page, but Lenovo conveniently removed it.

So please, please stop saying that we should be "thankful" for a corporation giving us something we paid for. That's ridiculous and condescending.

@Cybie:
What you wrote makes absolutely no sense. While it may be true that ICS is Android rewritten from the ground up, I don't know why you think that that makes it any more difficult to put on a device than any other version. Android, in any version, must be adapted to the hardware it runs on, and that includes the drivers that you cite as the source of the delay.

The correct term is "port". Lenovo is porting ICS to the K1. And I will also remind you that the ICS ROM you currently run was ported by two people.
Two people.
Not a multi-billion dollar computer corporation.

And as for your comment about Windows, well, Windows 8's codebase has been entirely rewritten as well. So there.

You may have bought it after Lenovo promised ICS, but the K1 was released and sold with HC 3.1 before then.
