Re: Ice Cream Sandwich for Ideapad K1

Just another point. If Lenovo is not supporting the K1 (EOL) and the ICS after it comes out, then I would rather wait  for them to iron out the problems  and have a stable ICS.

Just my 2 cents

I also have a galaxy tab plus. It IS still supported by Samsung AND they publicly stated it is a product that IS getting ICS. However, the update has still not come to pass. Given that, I don't think it's unreasonable for Lenovo to be a little late, as the K1 is an EOL product, and if they actually come out with it this month it will still be beating Samsung.

I think that anything compiled into the kernel, proprietary or not, becomes open source due to the nature of the GPL. I don't know if that applies to drivers inserted dynamically at run time.

Regarding drivers, which are mostly Loadable Kernel Modules (LKMs), I believe the answer is, it depends.  A driver that started out from a GPL base and is tailored for a specific platform would of course be subject to GPL.  A driver that is written from scratch, or ported from another non-GPL OS, and only uses established, "pubic" kernel APIs, could be considered non-GPL -- allowing a vendor to deliver it as a "binary blob", without publicly available source.  Many device vendors prefer this, to hide some of the internal details of their hardware implementation that they feel give them a competitive advantage, or that they just don't wish to publicly support.

While we wait for our bare bones ICS, lets do something constructive. Suppose I have backed up all the original tablet files to my pc, what would I have to do to get some of the included apps back onto my new ICS? Why don't we pick a few that most would like to still have and see what it would take. First we need to come up with a short list of what's most useful. Then anybody who knows what is necessary can list the steps needed to restore that app. I hope we can get back a few without having to spend anything but our time.

Well I've watched this thread for months, noticed all the other ghost users who finally decided to pipe up. Decided hey how much could it hurt? Probably a lot but here goes. I've concluded all the arguments are pretty much redundant since its people complaining about other people whining. After like 3 pages of that they're just as guilty of whining, no? Not trying to burst any bubbles here. On the issue of wanting ICS? Of course I do, who doesn't. When do I want it? I won't lie, I'm heartbroken to have it dangled in front of our face once or twice, then pulled away completely, then given a promised date that passed. But realistically, my friend on a samsung galaxy note has 2.3 still, while my brother on a HTC one V has 4.0 (or so they say, it's coming in the mail today) . It seems a little random how they decide to push the update and I'm pretty sure companies trying to keep their more consumer based products would prefer a clean upgrade. I know that may not be an excuse (I've been down the Sony Ericsson path, xperia x10. Never again) since the update has been out for a while. But with something they already pulled off their site, I'm surprised if they really do put that much extra work in it.

Sorry I didn't see the above post. To be honest ill be happy to get rid of all the apps that came with it. So much was just trials or stores.
