Ideatab A2107A doesn’t support some Android Apps.

2013-12-21, 8:50 AM

I needed to download  the application https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gettaxi.android&hl=en_GB , and this is where Ideatab A2107A failed me, again. It says “Your devise isn’t compatible with this version” . What might be the reason of that and can it be fixed by changing  some settings in the tab or by downloading some programs?

This app appears to only be compatible with phones. I have two 3G tablets (Samsung and Lenovo) and 2 phones, Play Store says that the app is only compatible with the phones.

Thank you, MrBeck, for your swift response. I didn’t expect the app.’s incompatibility,  because in https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gettaxi.android&hl=en_GB it only says “Requires Android  2.2 and up”, and no further system requirements are specified. Just interesting what might the difference be between Android in a tab and one in a smartphone.

I've no idea what they think is the difference in a tablet and a phone, especially since phones are now approaching the same screen sizes as tablets. There are other apps which have this issue though. I guess Google thought Android implementations were not fragmented enough by the hardware vendors so they decided to fragment by hardware type too. Idiots.

And what if I tried to download the app. in question to a tab that has a GSM module, such as a Samsung Galaxy Tab? Ideatab A2107A doesn’have  one, and that is what, I think, makes it different from a smartphone. By the way, talking about two devices, a tablet with GSM and an Android-operated smartphone, what is the difference between them, besides the different dimensions?

The question is what hardware the device has.  A smartphone has CDMA or GSM (and possibly LTE) radios, GPS, accelerometer, compass, and probably a few other things I forgetting.  A tablet may have some of those things, but usually not all.  If an app requires hardware the tablet doesn't have, it's incompatible.  Screen size and resolution shouldn't matter, but lazy developers sometimes just exclude large screens rather than creating a proper layout for tablet screens, which is just dumb because even without a true tablet layout, the phone layout should scale up reasonably well.

Try side-loading the app in question to your tablet, it might work.  I've done that with other apps before and it usually works.  For example, ESPN keeps removing tablet support from their SportsCenter app and then adding it back a couple updates later.  Each time they take away tablet support, I just side-load it on my A2109 and it works just fine.

Thank you, mcl630, for your very valuable input. Now I am getting to understand the problem. Actually, I have downloaded the Gettaxi app. to my new smartphone and it works just fine. I real love this app.. On the other hand, I tried to side-load it to A2107A, but it didnt work. It's very possible, that I was not performing it correctly, because I had a very vague idea of how to do it. What I did was: I connected the smartphone to the PC. I found the Gettaxi Folder and I copied it to the PC. Then I disconnected the Smartphone from PC. Then I connected the tab to the PC, and I copied the Gettaxi Folder from PC to the tab. Then I disconnected the tab from PC, but I didn't find any trace of Gettaxi in the tab. It seems to me, that I might have performed it the wrong way. Now since I have the app. working in the smartphone, I am just curious whether  or not I can get it work in the tab.

And…Happy Christmas to all those who are reading this these days.

You need to copy over the apk for Gettaxi app, which will probably be in the /data/apps folder on your phone.  You need root to directly access this folder.  If you don't have your phone rooted, try googling for it, you'll probably find the apk out there somewhere.

Thanks to everybody who responded and tried to help. It turned out that the Get Taxi app. is not designed  for tablets. It may be that after experimenting for a while I would get it work in A2107A, but it may be not. Fifty / fifty. For I have a smartphone, where the app. works, I intend to spend my time for something more important, we all have to set our priorities, don’t we?  So, even though the problem is not solved the way I intended,  I’ll  suspend it for the time beeing…once again, thanks to everybody who helped.
