Initial impression with my K1 - USA version

2011-12-02, 15:55 PM

Received mine three days ago, USA version, OS 3.1, 32GB

some impressions;

Battery seems good. over 8 hours.

GPS works good. First lock in takes minutes, but after that, seems quick.

Experienced several times of no response, have to reboot.

One concern is the low speaker volume, that is an issue for GPS application in freeway driving. It is not loud enough, even after I push the volume button to maximum. I will check other applications to see if low volume is also true.

Wifi seems weak when the distance is only 8 meteres from router. Dropped out a few times. My laptop signal indicator showed 4 bars out of 5 bars.

Rear camera seems ok. Have not try front one yet.

USB connection to laptop is ok. I can see the files on K1 internal drive. But need to check 'show hidden files' on laptop to see some files on /mnt/sdcard. However, could not see root/system folder of andriod system from laptop. Copy/paste files between laptop and K1 is ok. But it seems there are some bugs there, if I install a new application to /mnt/sdcard folder, Astro shows the files correctly on K1, but Windows explorer can not see the new files. Refresh does not help.

Not sure if new OS update fixed the low volume and wifi weak signal issue.

SD card door can not be open with the included clip pin. Terrible design. Suggest Lenovo to remove the door.

These devices have an A-GPS chip which means they rely on a wi-fi signal in addition to satts.... in order to get lock.  What the Lenovo Guru's have stated here anyway...    I wouldn't plan to use it in the car.

Thanks,

There's a thread about GPS but I'll post it here again:

- The Lenovo K1 uses the Broadcom BCM4751 Integrated Monolithic GPS Receiver.

Source: http://www.techrepublic.com/photos/cracking-open-the-lenovo-ideapad-k1/6286020?seq=58&tag=thumbnail-...

It's a GPS chip, not an A-GPS chip.

- A-GPS as it's implied in various places is not a lesser form of GPS. If anything, it's a 'smarter' form of GPS by using additional information and network services. In any case, the K1 doesn't have a A-GPS chip.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS

It's been confirmed K1 can be used as a standalone GPS.

That is right. Confirmed K1 can work as a standalone GPS.

I tried both CoPilot and Sygic offline GPS applications with success.  WiFi is not required to use the GPS.  It usually takes around 2 minutes to lock the satellites.

Ricochet, why do you see it as a failuret?    I have had only minimal experience with this app on my K1, but it seems to work just fine ... same as other tablets I have used.

Google Maps any version since 5.8... with Wi-fi disabled, and GPS enabled. GPS can get lock on my location, but is unable to provide directions to another location. I've turned off sleep and placed it on a table with a clear view of the open sky. Waited 5-10-15-20 minutes and the wait cursor just spins, and spins, and spins... Enable wi-fi and bingo, navigation to my destination is provided in seconds. Well documented here on the forum.

Thats an epic fail.
Thanks,
Ricochet

Re: Initial impression with my K1 - USA version

All in all, after my initial return of the first unit I purchased (Saturday afternoon from Office Depot), and getting a second unit, I am quite pleased.

It seems to be a nice overall tablet (once I cleared off all of the Lenovo bloat).  It is wild that Tablet makers are doing the same thing to tabs as Laptop makers are doing to Windows PC - just loading them with too much stuff!

I am still going through the paces, and hope to report even more favorably soon.

How about battery life?  Seems to be quite good thus far.
