Issues with the K1 and when will honeycomb 3.2 come out?

2011-08-17, 19:57 PM

Greetings!

I wanted to see if anyone has any information regarding any upcoming updates.  I purchased the Lenovo Ideapad K1 about two weeks ago and generally feel it is a good device, but, it is waaaaaay too buggy.  I have been reading reviews and complaints on this device and see that the issues I am having are pretty common.  I will list them below.

1.  At times the device does not want to wake from sleep.  I hit the wake button after not using it for a while and it just sits there.  I have realized that it is not frozen but there is some delayed response.  The first few times it happened I did a hard restart by pressing and holding the power button.  But, I have realized that if I press the power button and just leave it be for 30 seconds to 1 minute it just wakes.  A couple of times after it woke up an error came up saying the android launcher has stopped responding and will be force closed.

2.  Another issue is that at times when it does wake up it becomes unresponsive for about 20 to 30 seconds.

3.  At times it randomly restarts.  It has never restarted while I am using it, I have found it tends to restart right after I put it down.... Issue with the gyroscope?

4.  Forced close on apps frequently.  This may just be an issue with the app itself and not android.

5.  Picky Wifi.  While I am at home the wifi works well, however, when I am at work on a public wifi system I have found that this thing is hit or miss.  I have found that on public networks in which you have to accept the "terms and conditions of use" before full access is granted this thing gets confused.  At first I thought it was the network, but, both my iPhone and lenovo laptop had no issues connecting while the K1 just sat there saying "obtaining IP address".  At other times it works just fine and I am able to accept the terms and conditions in the web browser.  But, it actually works maybe 25% of the time.

All and all, this is a good device, however on several occasions it became unresponsive when I needed some important information.  I got this thing so I can browse the web, watch netflix, and so I can replace my iPhone when it comes to medical apps.  I didn't want to get the the iPad but I am starting to think that maybe I should have sucked it up and spent the extra 100 bucks.  I am trying to switch over to Android based devices as I have lost a great deal of respect for Apple due to their law suit shenanigans.  To be honest, if I pay nearly 500 dollars for something I expect that it should just work.  I understand this is a new device so I will not say I am disappointed just yet, it has the potential to be great... I guess we'll see how dedicated Lenovo really is over the next few weeks or months.

I received my K1 last Friday and have the exact same problems as you describe. I'm hopeful that the issues will be resolved soon too, or I too may just sell the K1 and go for an iPad. I've been a Thinkpad fan for years and I also recently bought a Thinkpad Edge 14 which I have been very happy with.

I'm having the same issues!

Plus, the GPS won't come in sometimes even when I am completely outside with no buildings or trees around.

I am also not able to get my Chrome bookmarks synced with stock browser even though it has that option.

The Chrome bookmark issue is internal with Google since the Android team and Chrome team are seprate and is being addressed. There is a great app that I'm using called Chromemarks which comes in free and pay versions that sync your Chrome bookmarks and allow you to access (and for the pay version edit) them. Highly recommend this app since it looks like this issue is months old.

I know I returned my Ideapad for another, but I'm trying to stick around and help with small issues best I can and share any info I've gotten. Desipite this set back I'm still a Lenovo fanboy and hope to one day own a fully functioning Lenovo tablet (with all the bugs worked out). Highly recommend you guys also turn to some of the larger Android communities for help, some issues aren't Lenovo issues, but issues with the actual OS shared by all Androids (though nothing as major as the current Ideapad K1 issues). This inclues small app crashes, the bookmark syncing and being able to access all of your internal storage on your PC. Most of the communities are still mostly focused on phones, but because of the popularity of the tablets are beginning to shift gears.

3.2 is essentially the same as 3.1 but only adds support for 7" tablets, so it would not help us any...

Next step is likely the Ice Cream Sandwich release.

I cant wait for Ice Cream Sandwich roll out! Anything more stable and lighter than Honeycomb will be great!  Its so much better to have one OS for phones and tablets!

Honeycomb 3.2 is not just 7in screen support and that's it. Whoever fed you that is lying or don't know what they're talking about. There are clear bug fixes - see below. I would also note that the Motorola Xoom and the Asus Transformer all got OTA updates to Honeycomb 3.2. Furthermore, there's a battery drain issue from cell standby on many wifi tablets that get fixed.

The 3.2 SDK was released on 15 July 2011.Changes included:

  • Improved hardware support, including optimisations for a wider range of tablets
  • Easier access for apps to files on the SD card, e.g. for synchronisation
  • Compatibility display mode for apps that have not yet been optimized for tablet screen resolutions
  • New display support functions that give developers more control over the look and feel on different Android devices.

Hmm, I have had some freezes, and a few forced disconnects. No restarts yet or shut offs.

App store does not have movies yet as others have found.
Netflix works pretty good.
Haven't tried the issue with losing the music stream when screen sleeps yet.
Crackle installs but hasn't played for me yet.
As for GPS I don't see how the map can load without internet?
Kinda weird to have GPS without 3g. Unless theres a non internet GPS app I don't know about ??
It is a little slow waking up from sleep.

With the specs of this tablet, I would think we should get the new OS.
