K1 - Don't loose your USB cable

2012-02-17, 1:02 AM

This is regarding the data cable - not the host cable that we are already having issues with availability.

I looked online and did a chat with Lenovo sales, because I wanted to get spare data cables to experiment with pinouts to make my own host cable since Lenovo sits on their a$$ (except Mark, of course).

Guess what - data cables ARE NOT AVAILABLY FOR SALE EITHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lenovo support truly sucks.  I am thinking about blogging about all these support problems to get the word out to the potential buying public.

It's idiotic !!!!  If Lenovo is going to use a proprietary connector, they should make any accessory that utilizes the connector available, otherwise, they should use standard connectors!  I can understand that a company may want to use prop connectors so they can make money on accessories that are exclusive, but dammit, make the accessories available if that's the case!!!

This is for the K1.

The K1 uses a proprietary 34 pin connector for power and usb.  There is no micro usb connector - usb connection on a K1 utilizes the standard USB A for connection to another computer, but the side that plugs into the K1 is the proprietary connector.

I will mod the post title - thanks

That's the problem.  You cannot get the USB data cable ANYWHERE because Lenovo decided to pass the USB through their proprietary connector.

Which would be OK - if at least Lenovo would offer it for sale.  To me, THAT is unforgivable.  It's one thing for a throw away product like one of those cheap $99 tabs, but repugnant from a major company like Lenovo.  It's tantamount to buying a Ford Focus, then not being able to buy spare parts even from Ford when something happens to it.

I am trying to find out who manufactures the connector to source the connector so I can at least get a few to make my own if necessary.  Most companies like Lenovo will use OTC parts from existing manufacturer lines - you just have to figure out who makes the one they're using).  It's a 34 pin with an odd configuration, with 4 pins spaced out (compared to 34 evenly spaced pins).
