Some of you don't get it about the compass at all, do you? If the compass is off, then Google Maps is off, Google Sky is off, SkEye is off, Star Charts are off, etc., etc., etc....

I can take my little 2 year old phone, hold it up to the sky and have the stars line up with the screen to see what is what. Here, I have this beautiful 10" screen on my tablet, and can I use it similarly? Have fun with that...

This is only one of a multitude of problems with the tablet that SHOULD BE ADDRESSED, but I'm betting will simply continue to be ignored as they have been since day one. Unfortunately, for better or worse, I own it now. I expect far more for my money than what has transpired.

Ssayer, as far as I can tell, the compass in my K1 seems to work correctly for all applications (and I use several, since I use my tablet a lot for geocaching).  I am on the latest US software release ( K1_A301_14_14_120109_US).  So are you sure that there is a software bug that Lenovo is refusing to fix?  One thing I have noticed is a tendency for some applications which use the compass to sometimes get confused when the tablet changes display orientation (i.e., landscape to portrait), and that can happen easily if you're moving the tablet around a lot (like when looking at star maps).   So I always turn off (disable) the auto-rotation switch when doing mapping-oriented functions, and don't seem to be having any problems.

Ssayer,

Have you tried Smart Compass Lite yet?  I have 14_14 as well, and other compass apps are 90 degrees off as well.  Smart Compass is the only one (that I've found) that orients correctly.  My Google Maps orient correctly, but I did not notice if it DIDN'T orient prior to loading Smart Compass.  Good Luck.

Again, I found out about SC because many phones experience the same 90 degree issue, so found out about SC through a phone forum.

If you'll read this link, you will see that this problem has been ongoing. It has also been confirmed by Lenovo. On 12/26/2011 (Page 2 of the link), I showed an app that DOES work correctly, and posted it so that it might help Lenovo diagnose their problem.

Obviously 3 months is insufficient time for Lenovo to get around to fixing a software "glitch" and now that they're discontinuing the K1...

Is the 90 degree problem a software bug if it happens to some tablets with the most recent system software update, but not to others with the same update? Or is it a hardware problem?

Ssayer, I read the thread you referenced, and there are certainly some people having this problem, but I did not see in there anywhere that someone from Lenovo confirmed that there is a code problem.  I see Mark's comment about possible issues with a cell phone in proximity to the tablet, but nothing official.

If your tablet was working correctly before the 3.2 update, then maybe something did get messed up, but realize that there are others for whom it has continued to work correctly.  If it started working incorrectly immediately after the update, then it seems reasonable to assume that it's not a hardware problem.  In any case, I just wanted to give you the additional information that it seems to be working fine for some K1 owners, so that you don't assume that the only possible cause is a missing software fix from Lenovo (for which, apparently, you could be waiting a long time).

Another thing that throws the compass sensor off are the magnets that  a lot of cases/covers use to hold itself shut

IMO, I  think the compass issue is a minor one compared to  the collection of other issues (including upgrading to ICS).

I feel that it was simply easier for Lenovo to abondon the device, rather than work out the kinks.  Hopefully, they will release their hardware drivers and the development community can build a workable solution.

Again, due to this poor expereince, I will never purchase another Lenovo product in the future - nor will I recommend them to my employer, friends, acquaintances, etc...

Ironically, due to this device being discontinued, I have recently purchased some accessories for it in case I lose a charger, etc....

Yes me too.. This is a sad end for the support and blind love I've given to a company and it's products for 15yrs
The Lenovo ethos it's far from the PRINCIPLES IBM ran the company with
P.s. Don't the k1 and a1 have the same cables? Think the a1 is better supported so hopefully accessories won't be a problem in the future

The A1 doesn't have an HDMI port, and cannot use a USB Host Cable. Not sure about the charging cable working with the K1, so I guess the only compatibility is the micro USB cable, which is a standard off-the-shelf item.
