Re: Lenovo Tab 4 8 Plus Oreo update

2019-07-31, 20:33 PM

My wife and I both have the V model which is the only one available from Amazon in the States (wedding gifts).  While it's not listed, I've been assured by Lenovo multiple times that it is slated to receive the Oreo update as well.  I've even got their assurances documneted with a case number.  I'm in (central) Texas and haven't seen the update yet.  I've curious about the general location of those who aren't receiving the update vs. those who are.  I strongly suspect there is some kind of regional release thing going on.

I'm in the UK and have the -X model. Are they still rolling the update out? According to the matrix it started late last year surely all those who will get it would of got it by now? The matrix mentions complete as well. I've emailed Lenovo and will post an update when they've replied.

I don't believe it is region related. I believe it's model and software.

I purchased the 8704x with ROW software, I am in Florida and I got the update within  hours of it's release.

If it's model and software there's no reason for the X model not to have received the update in the UK.  Too many people with too many inconsistent reports of (not) receiving the update for me to simply believe they've got it all worked out.

My hunch is that is is software related, as I have "TB-8704X_S000004_180131_EE", I have no idea what the EE means but I bought the device in the UK and it came sealed with a UK charger. I reckon they haven't yet released the update to those on the -EE firmware (hence why the other user who bought from laptopoutlet also hasn't recieved it), what I want to know is will they ever? Since from what I've read it seems as if Oreo is pretty much fully rolled out for the ROW  firmware.

To add to my worries even my warranty is showing as expired, I literally opened the package today! Need to get that checked.

Your model has EE software. I believe this is the issuje.. model 8704x with EE software.

yes, the update rolled out months ago and has had two updates as well. We're on july 5 2019 security update.

The only inconsistencies I have heard are you guys here, with EE software. No one over on xda is saying they haven't gotten the update yet ( they're ROW software, no one has mentioned EE software), except the V model. Maybe lenovo is still working on the EE update. Is this a new released model?

As far as the V model. I hope they do release it. They should update the matrix to include the v model if they are, that's the whole purpose of the matrix! They didn't have any problem updating the matrix to say complete for the X & F models.

I also couldn't find much on the EE build. As for the tablet, the hardware was manufactured in April 2018 so you could say it is new-but the model remains the same as all the others. Just realised now that EE could be referring to the network? But there is no preloaded software to say this, no EE app/boot logo etc. I can only hope their offical support can guide me, otherwise this thing is going back to the seller.

As I stated earlier in the conversation, I believe EE is Eastern Europe, as ROW is rest of world. There is one for China also, CN - or similar.

I looked around for the EE software. I couldn't find it anywhere. The russian forum has the ROW images. But nothing for EE. There might be a forum somewhere in EE that has it.  What are the popular forums in the UK? Look there.

Got a reply from Lenovo which turned out not only to be useless but ridiculous, they told me "any updates to android that are pushed to devices are controlled by Google, it is advisable to contact Google and discuss this with them." Google has no responsibility for this device since it is not Android One. Shows Lenovo's incompetence.

I'm in the process of returning, I don't have time to waste with little things like this, shame since it seems like a nice device.

They've given me that claptrap in the past, as if Google will even talk to me.  That's why I've pretty much given up hope on getting an Oreo update while it's still under warranty and plan on installing something like Lineage OS once the warranty expires (if I feel brave enough and all the bugs are worked out).  I've installed Cyangenmod on both the Kindle Fire HD 7 and the Nexus 7 but it's been a while and I didn't value them as much as do this tablet.
