Re: Lenovo Tab 4 8 plus major issue - micro SD corruption

2017-12-01, 17:30 PM

Why put so many effort to get around with a problem with a phone itself?

I almost returned the Tab 4 back after reading issues related to SD cards. I also noticed that the SD card corruption issue seemed to be related to SanDisk or Samsung cards, and mostly when formatting as internal storage, which is what I wanted to do as well.

However, I came across a suggestion to use a Transcend card instead, in another thread  on this support forum, and so I took a chance with that. I was able to successfully format a Transend card,  32GB microSDHC Class 10 (TS32GUSDU1PE) , for internal storage. Multiple reboots have not corrupted the card so far.

Good news. Thank you for this clear explanation. Has anyone else tried this MicroSDHC card?

One needs reliability when dealing with memory. One should not have to worry that the device may corrupt the memory or not. I have no confidence at all in Lenovo as they seem to have had this issue for quite a while.

Yeah I agree that it's not worth putting in a lot of effort - best to get a device that will work.

Furtunately for me, the SD card corruption issue has not arisen so far, so the only effort I've put in has been to read a bit on forums to find out a card that would work. The Tab 4 is pretty good otherwise, and I couldn't find another tablet at this price point ($110), with virtually no bloatware, and new version of Android Nougat. Also, this device is intended for kids in the household, and it's going to be games and movies downloaded from netflix. So, nothing important will be on this device. For this reason, it's not a huge issue in my case.

Re: Lenovo Tab 4 8 plus major issue - micro SD corruption

2017-12-16, 8:55 AM

I think I might have found the reason for this external SD Card corruption.

On my Lenovo Tab 4 8 plus a lot of operating system log files are written permanently by the Android/Linux kernel. That amounts to about 60 MB per day.

If no SD card present the files are written to folder [Internal_Root]/log

If an external (portable) SD card is inserted the files are written to folder [SD_Card_Root]/log

So I suspect because the Android system permanently writes, the SD card cannot be unmounted successfully during shutdown, and this is causing the corruption.

I found a (cumbersome) workaround: In Android Settings / Storage, click eject symbol to unmount SD card manually, but it takes like 20-30 secs. Then you can shutdown/reboot without corruption.

But this is clearly something Lenovo must fix, at least some of the devices are shipped with these debug log settings, which should only be used in their labs for testing. On consumer's devices this causes corruption, has an adverse impact on performance and will wear out and fill the SD card by permanent writing to it.

So guys can you confirm there are these system logfiles in the /log folder of your SD card?

Re: Lenovo Tab 4 8 plus major issue - micro SD corruption

After checking for system updates manually I saw there was still one update outstanding, the system had not notified me about it.

Following this prodedure I was able to finally get rid of the annoying log files:

    1. Eject SD card in Android settings
    2. Power down
    3. Remove SD card
    4. Power up and install latest Android update / reboot
    5. Meanwhile I inserted SD card into laptop and deleted /log folder
    6. After Android update was installed power down and insert SD card
    7. Power up, no more logs are written

But jeez Lenovo, how is a normal user going to find out how to do this. I am an Android developer BTW.

Not sure yet how this will affect the corruption problem. Unmounting (eject) still takes like 20 secs or so. I guess in the future I will avoid power down / reboot as long as possible and if I need to, eject SD card in Android settings before doing so.

I just found a better solution in a German forum which seems to fix all problems by using a secret Lenovo system menu:

1. open contacts - search for ####3333#

2. secret menu appears, see screenshot

3. choose "method three" = "close log after reboot" and then click "Exit"

4. unmount sd card in Android settings to be safe

5. reboot

Hope you have find the solution for this - I am in the process of testing now. Massive kudos to you my friend if it is "the fix" I have been looking for.

My tab 4 has very nearly been in the bin several times due to this huge problem.

No kudos to Lenovo support as they are worse than useless.

Waiting to pick up replacement Huawei MediaPad 8.4 before Friday (maybe I won't have to bother now - fingers crossed)

Have also received 2 software updates over the last two days. Noticed after the 1st update that the shutdown procedure had changed on this tablet & was thinking they had incorporated an un-mount SD card before shutdown.

Questions needs to be asked - Why did Lenovo release tablets with this problem. It has fried 2 of my SD cards - 1 Samsung 128gb & a SanDisk 64gb costing me time and money due to there incompitance and lack of customer care.

Every tablet I've had has had some issue or other( yes it sucks) ...that being said, can't you warranty those cards back?

I'm going to root mine, and try to delve into it a bit more..for a basic tablet it fits my needs, however it is not something I feel I can trust due to this issue

Has anyone successfully warranted a SD card? The lifetime warranty SanDisk offer is not worth the packaging it is written on
