Re: Lenovo Tab 4 8 plus major issue - micro SD corruption

I have now lost two 128GB cards to Lenovo tablets that is over £100 with of card to me. Lenovo need to be brought to task over these issues but I fear they will hide behind corporate closed doors as per usual.

I just bought a Tab 4 10 Plus a few days ago. Somehow, I missed this thread when I was googling for major issues with the model.

While I bought the 64GB storage version, so don't need an microSD card immediately, I'll definitely need one later, so this is quite worrying -- esp. kazam401's report that he's still having issues, despite the firmware update which reportedly fixed it in the Tab 4 8 models for other people. I had believed that the 8" and 10" were identical in all SW & HW respects, except the capacity of the battery and physical size, so would have expected any firmware update would be apply to both.

I haven't tried a card yet, but have a Samsung EVO Select 128GB (U3) on the way... Maybe I'll try some leftover 8GB from the Nokia featurephone days first...

Would you (and anyone else who has tried this with a Tab 4 10 Plus) report whether or not large microSD cards are working, and post their firmware version? Here are mine (which the tablet says is the latest available for OTA update):
Build number: TB-X704F_S000053_180122_ROW

Software version: TB-X704F_RF01_20180122

(4GB RAM / 64GB storage, which shouldn't matter)

I can say that I've very reliably used 128GB cards , Samsung & Kingston. Don't know about other brands as I did not have that size in them to test , but my 128GB cards have been shuttled between cameras, PC's and the Tab numerous times , have been full , half and quarter used and occasionally reformatted several times to see how the tablet would respond, no problems so far. I have TB-8804X_RF01_180203_ROW firmware

I've just been stooged by a "fake" Samsung 256GB card !

Got it from eBay , fastest method where I live , a supposedly reliable eBay supplier ,  SDXC , pkg all looked legit , said made in Korea ,took it out , ran some tests , guess what , it's fake !

Best read speed was 16MBps and write was a pathetic 8MBps.

The only difference noticable was the edge of the SD card was Black , not the White of my genuine ones.

Tried it in my TB-8704X Plus 64GB , crashed multiple times , succeded in tranfers once , took 5 hours to transfer 4GB over a USB3 connection.

I reiterate just what I've said in previous posts , there are almost more "fakes" out there than genuine , so be careful folks !

I've decided to give this tablet one last punt and ordered a 64GB Transcend card, seeing as a few people seem to have had success with that brand. I'll see how it goes and report back; shouldn't be long as this thing tends to destroy cards fairly quickly.

I'm surprised to see messages on corruptions. Thought Lenovo fixed it with the updates. I posted a bit earlier about the 8 inch version, it works allright with a 128 gb samsung sd. And it is still working fine. Got it setup like this:

-I got the updates till December. Haven't done the Januari or later updates. Maybe the December one is the best?

-And I got the sd card setup as 'Portable'

-Plus the secret menu trick, which disables writing to the sd as some kind of 'cache' directory.

Don't know which trick helps the SD card, maybe a combination of things, hope it can help someone else's device.

Saw someone mentioned fake sd cards. I also ran into a couple, a lot of cards on e-bay are suspiciously cheap, maybe also amazon has those crazy cheapass 128gb 256gb cards for a couple of bucks. It has nothing to do with Lenovo and they will surely corrupt in any device, because the storage size has been tricked and will destroy your data.

Destroyed 2cards of 64GB. Cards had to be destroyed as data was readable but not erasable. Noticed the same problem with Lenovo note phones.

This is the 8" version, and it has all updates up to and including the February one, and it has the Option 3 fix to stop the constant writes, and it had the SD cards formatted as portable storage, and one of them was a 128GB Samsung too, and no, I never buy cards off eBay, only ever reputable suppliers and I full format them on a PC as a test before doing another format in the mobile device.

And it's still broken.

Sorry to hear your device is still giving problems with the sd.

Maybe somehow disabling the updates after december could give a chance for it to work better, if you want to go through the trouble. It would be the same setup as how I got it working.

But at the same time, I'd think it would be weird if an software update/downgrade would fix hardware damage.

Hope Lenovo will investigate it if software updates cannot change it? I think it's difficult for software to destroy hardware. Even a virus can't destroy an sd card physically, it's always fixable by reformatting, but maybe with upping the voltages or extreme read/writes a software virus can destroy it.

If it's hardware related I would suspect there's a batch of tablets with faulty sd connectors floating around. Doing something accidentaly outside hardware standards, killing the sd cards.

I have no problem with the SD card after the update a couple of months ago. However the latest update corrupted the wifi connection. Lenovo is a joke and I will certainly go back to Huawei when their new tablet phone comes.
