Lenovo Tips application advertising paid services via notifications

2021-08-18, 6:51 AM

I know that hardware manufacturers install their own apps on the devices they sell to try and improve user experience but today I was surprised to see the following on my P11 this morning: A notification of an offer to join Amazon music.

There is no option to dismiss you have to click to find out more.

Further, these notifications cannot be disabled, nor can the Lenovo "Tips" app be disabled.

This is not a tip. This is a push that is advertising a paid service.

I loathe this sort of thing.

Please allow us to disable any service and app so that we can just use the tablet as we intended.

Anthony

The above comment is incorrect. It is possible to disable Lenovo Tips by issuing the following adb command after enabling developer options on the device:

`adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 {package name here}`. In order to determine what is the package name of Lenovo Tips, a simple application such as ML Manager from the Play Store can be used.

The step detailed in this comment will NOT void your warranty, as it only requires developer-level access to the device, and not root permissions. Enabling developer mode on the P11 does not void your warranty either.

Hello @ TonyJewell !

Thanks for posting here at the Community Forums!

Apologies for the delayed response!

You may try to go to your Tab P11's Settings > Notifications > search for the Lenovo Tips and tap/select it then go to Permissions and see if there's an option to have the app itself from providing notifications into your Tab P11's screen.

It seems that the Lenovo Tips app that you're referring to is a pre-installed app that cannot be uninstalled or disabled.

You may also check the Tab P11's User Guide to see further details about Notifications & Quick Settings.

Thanks,

Adriel_Lenovo

I have a Lenovo tab that also has this bloatware virus installed, there's no way to disable the adverts (they call the ads tips, they're not, they're adverts for amazon music etc). This is ridiculous Lenovo, I didn't spend £170 on a tablet to be pumped with ads. Will not buy another Lenovo product.

To make things worse the Lenovo tips app has full control over the tablet, shame on you Lenovo. Now forced to root the tablet as it's the only way to remove your nasty adware.

@Adriel_lenovo As I stated in my original posting:

Further, these notifications cannot be disabled, nor can the Lenovo "Tips" app be disabled.

So I am stuck with a device that pushes advertisements for third-party payed services at me while I use it.

Maybe you could ask your employers why they think this is acceptable?

Yes Lenovo please explain why you think it's in anyway acceptable? Please also explain why this app has full control over the system, camera, email, contacts etc? Please explain why permissions can't be changed? Please explain why notifications can't be disabled and lastly explain why this app has been deliberately written so that none of the above can be turned off nor the app disabled or uninstalled? It's not acceptable and I don't appreciate being woken up by adverts for Amazon.

Meanwhile this silly reply is on Twitter and on the front page of Hacker News.

I hope Lenovo can come with a decent reply to this PR **bleep**show.

What a gross signal to the direction of Lenovo's travel

I'd ask those that own this to submit requests to what data is captured and how it's used.

Ew.

Hello @ TonyJewell !

Checking with the relevant team, the Lenovo Tips application cannot be disabled or removed off the Tab P11 since this is a pre installed app itself.

Thanks,

That's simply not good enough Lenovo, we've already told you it can't be disabled, removed or notifications turned off. You must provide us with a way to disable the adverts, if you cannot or refuse to do so then you need to reach out and offer us refunds as your product isn't fit for purpose, no where in the small print does it say we have to endure advertising. You are receiving money for pushing adverts and deceiving the end users of your products. Sort it out ASAP or refund us.
