SD Card on Lenovo Tablet

2021-02-23, 11:31 AM

When I got my tablet new less than 1 year ago, I chose to have the SD card as external storage.  I'm not sure, but I think that can be used as additional memory by the tablet, instead of external storage?  If so, does anyone know how I can remove the existing SD card and replace it with a new one that will function as part of the tablet?  I've tried finding the answer but so far, no luck.  Thanks in advance!

Hello @v015eyjd!

Nice to have you here at the Community Forums!

What type of Lenovo device are you using?

Can you please share its MTM (machine type-model) number for us to check its specifications?

We'll be waiting for your response.

Thanks,

Adriel_lenovo

Thanks for providing your device's details @v015eyjd!

You may check page 2 of the Tab M10's Quick Start Guide to see the steps on how to properly remove the external card itself.

Make sure that it is OFF first before removing it or putting up a new external Micro SD card.

But if you're referring to the 16GB, 32GB or 64GB eMMC storage that the Tab M10 have, it cannot be removed since it is attached or soldered to the device's System Board itself, based on its complete specifications guide.

What can be done here is to add an additional storage instead since the Tab M10 tablet can support up to 256GB of MicroSD card.

Thanks,

Hi,

Here's a thread with a link to another thread, these should  help.

I removed the image here.

No, not referring to that.

Yes, that's what I'm trying to figure out how to do.  I know I can remove the SD card that is in there now, being used simply for external storage.  But if I were to format that SD card, and reinsert it into the tablet, I'm assuming it would see it as "new" and prompt me to pick whether I want to use it as external storage or as a supplement to the internal storage?  Is that correct?

Yes, that article says "The internal storage and the SD storage will be combined.  This is supposed to be done when you are first setting up the SD card.  You can not remove the card if it is set for internal storage, if you do, the card will not work anymore.".  So as I posed in my response to @Ala_Lenovo, if I remove the SD card that is there and reformat it, then replace it in the slot on the Tablet, it will set the card up for combining with the internal storage, right?

Hi,

Unmount the card from within Android and remove it.  Then, when you put it back in the tablet and turn it on, Android "should" ask whether you want the card to be set up as internal or external storage.

I'm not sure whether you even have to reformat the card or not, I always just used a new card for internal storage, I never formatted it.  The tablet did that.

You are correct. Remember that it will slow down your tablet if you use it as integrated memory, because SD cards have slow write speeds.

Ok...will try that.  I will probably just buy a new card with the fastest write speed possible.  I have an iPhone and a laptop, so I don't use the tablet for any "heavy lifting".  So the fastest I can get will do, I think.  Thanks!
