Tab 4 10 Plus and Netflix

2017-11-27, 6:50 AM

I've noticed that the Netflix app on my Tab 4 10 Plus (TB-X704V) looks like it's only displaying 720p resolution maximum and the device is not even listed on the Netflix site under supported android tablets for HD content page: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23939

Any idea if Lenovo will be working on FHD 1080p compliance for the Tab 4 10 Plus with Netflix and when?

Anyone else interested in this issue probably shouldn't hold their breath. I think Lenovo rushed this device to market before completing Netflix HD certification, or worse, this tablet isn't capable of Netflix HD. Support is not much help.

Lean: Hi, welcome to Lenovo Chat Services, I'm Lean. I'll be your Lenovo technician today.
Me: Hello lean
Lean: Hi, I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but regarding your concern, we don't have the information regarding that yet.
Me: When will you have an update?
Lean: I apologize but it is not known to us here in the hardware department, but please continually check our website support.lenovo.com for updates.
Me: I believe this is a product defect. Please escalate this to your software team.
Lean: Will try and check this one to them. Again, I apologize for this. Is there anything else I can assist you with?
Me: I want a ticket number and regular updates on this issue.
Lean: I apologize but please check our website for updates.
Lean: Case number is 8010307221.
Me: Where on your website?
Me: Is there an existing solution for this issue?
Lean: Again, that will be up to our software team. Another option is to check our forums http://forums.lenovo.com/
Me: I have already checked the forums and there is nothing. I posted about this issue and got no response.
Me: I want some assurance that this issue is being investigated and I will receive an update.
Lean: I cannot provide an assurance. and again, please check the website or forums for updates.
Me: This is unacceptable. The marketing for this product is misleading. It is marketed as a Full HD tablet, and comes with Netflix pre-installed, but Netflix is not compatible with this Tablet for Full HD. At best, this is a defect. I need regular updates and assurance that this is being resolved.
Lean: I suggest that you contact our Sales department. You are speaking with the Hardware Technical Support department, and this regarding an application (Netflix). If you think that the marketing is misleading for this, please contact our Sales at 855-253-6686.
Me: How do I contact your software technical support department?
Lean: Here's their number: 855 271 3878 option 2.
Lean: Again, we apologize for the inconvenience. Is there anything else I can assist you with?
Me: No, and this support experience has been unacceptable and reflects poorly on Lenovo.
You have disconnected.

Re: Tab 4 10 Plus and Netflix

UPDATE: This Netflix diagnostic video will play in 1080p on my Windows 10 PC in the official Netflix app from the Windows Store, but it will only play in 540p on the Android app on the Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus!! The current resolution displays in the top right corner of the video at all times: http://www.netflix.com/WiMovie/70297469

I now have proof that I'm not getting HD (not even 720p!!!) on this device! I tried contacting Netflix support but they were no help. I would love it if Lenovo would actually look into this and give me an official response. This is a serious problem with your new flagship tablet and the more units are sold, the more people will start to notice this and get mad!!

I saw this article about a similar problem with the OnePlus 5T phone: https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/10/16758728/oneplus-5t-netflix-amazon-prime-video-hd-streaming

I checked DRM Info and it appears the Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus DOES support Widevine Level 1 DRM, so we're still without an explanation.

I tried the Lenovo Support Twitter and got this response:

We'll forward your concern to the appropriate department and we also recommend you to post your concern in our community forums so that our product specialist and administrators will take a look on it and address the issue. You can click this link to our forums lnv.gy/2yoZUax - Mark_Lenovo

So does anyone from Lenovo actually read these forums? How do you get them to respond? All I seem to get from the front-line support staff is a run-around.

Hi exT613,

I tried to figure out from Netflix's announcemenst and other articles from the internet what cause that you're not capable of streaming videos in hd/fhd.

What I found:

It is not enough to stream videos in HD that the devices supports Widevine Level 1 DRM, Netflix certification is needed too (Netflix testing it, make the certificate to this specific device and will be published to the Netflix site).

Thats why there is a small amount of devices are HD certified.

For example you should read this article.

Regards.

Great, thanks for the link. It's interesting that someone was able to hack it and get HD without Netflix certification, but I'm not willing to go to those lengths. I guess we are just waiting for Netflix to do the right thing and certify this tablet since it is Widevine L1 capable. I wonder how to apply the right pressure on them? Go to the media? When I talked to Netflix frontline support, they had no idea what I was even talking about. In my opinion, Lenovo should be applying the right pressure. I'm sure Apple/Samsung have no problem getting their new flagships certified ASAP.

Maybe Netflix has limited resources to test devices, and they prefer testing and certificate popular devices first, because this way they can reach more users with HD content.

Did you tried contacting to Netflix about this?

They have online chat possibility on their website.

Re: Tab 4 10 Plus and Netflix

Hard to believe that a company with 100 million subscribers has limited resources, but there may be some truth to prioritizing bigger manufacturers. Although there are some older Lenovo devices on that list already. I did try Netflix and the frontline support was not knowledgeable on the subject.

I just tried the hacked APK from the link you shared and it worked perfectly. So now we know that the Tab 4 10 Plus is fully capable of displaying 1080p Netflix content and the fix is trivial. The only thing standing in the way is bureaucracy.

DRM Info: Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus does support Widevine Level 1.

Lucky guy you are. Mine shows L3. Therefore, even theoretically I get just SD content. I have the variant with LTE. That is a TB-X704L with the L at the end. Has anyone Widevine L1 with a TB-X704L? I wonder whether I got a faulty unit or whether this affects all TB-X704L or whther there are region specific variants.
