Tab4 8 Plus tablet still on Nougat 7.1.1...HELP!

2019-07-10, 19:54 PM

Hi.

I recently bought a brand new Tab4 8 Plus Wifi/LTE (UK model) tablet. Based on Lenovo's Upgrade Matrix this tablet received it's latest Oreo 8.0 few months ago and according to various sources online it is now up to 8.1.

I am deeply disturbed to find out that my tablet is still running Nougat 7.1.1.

Surely with an update months ago the tablet would have "sensed" or received it by now?

N.B. I only had the tablet for 24hours. Model number is TB-8704X with the January 2018 security update.

Please help.

If you only got the tablet days ago, I'd say keep calm, keep the tablet's wifi on, check the Android / System Settings menu every so often (sometimes the upgrade can show up without triggering the Notification area), and keep it charged up.  It's taken several people on this forum some days or weeks after purchase, even though the Oreo upgrade came months ago.  As you say, it's just a matter of being "detected" by the Lenovo Mother Ship, and there are significant regional and local differences in how quick that is.

Some new users have gotten several updates to Nougat before Oreo, and the Oreo upgrade has been followed by several smaller updates to it.  Important to have the tablet fully charged or connected to the wall socket during the upgrade or update process, because the process will freeze at 30% and then resume again at full charge, a risky business.

Understood.

When it comes to updates especially with Lenovo/Moto's reputation I am quite impatient.

I also currently have the Moto G7 (bought as brand new, SIM-free & fully factory unlcoked) a good 2 months ago. It is running on 9 Pie but on an April security update. That says it all about this company's bad reputation on updates.

I do always keep my devices wifi on and charged abpive 30% as you have mentioned.

But if i may ask what happens if an update comes and an installation process was cut off because of low battery will that damage the software of the tablet?

I learned by doing - the tablet wasn't sufficiently charged and it paused the process - I can't recall if it was during the big download or installation - and alerted me to charge it.  It was easy enough to continue once charged and it all went fine, but it was nerve-wracking.  Ever since I've connected to the charge block before doing an update.  I'll add that my microSD is formatted as ordinary "portable" rather than "adoptable / internal" - among other things I'm leery of how updates might work with the latter, which is half-baked in my experience.

To tell the truth, I don't sweat Android version upgrades since these lower end devices don't support the latest functions, and newer isn't always better.  But Oreo is a good one, actually more efficiently coded, almost 1GB smaller than Nougat and has a few new tricks.  The Android Settings are renovated from Nougat, but you've already got Pie so no news.  And on my model, Lenovo fixed a network recognition bug causing trouble with some internet-based apps.

I endeavour to charge my tablet as often as necessary and especially keeping battery levels above 30%.

And there is the age old argument that you musn't charge a device overnight. For me I never had any issues with that.

So, I guess I will have to wait a bit longer. But sometimes the wait is the most painful. I have already done another factory reset within the past 3-4 days of turning on my tablet and see if it can help squash some factory bugs. Alas, so far no Oreo 8.0/8.1 update. Yet.

In my opinion with a big company such as Lenovo (with all their engineers) surely this tablet is capable of running 9 Pie? Surely?
