This has me stumped

2011-12-28, 0:59 AM

I didn't purchase the K1 to watch YouTube movies but I would like to do it now and then.  The fact that I get buffering every 30 seconds or so has me baffled.  Here's the situation:

1gig DSL.  I know that is slow but that's all we have in the sub-division.  No cable broadband.  Neighbors viewing Netflix don't seem to have any problems with it.

Upgraded the WiFi router to Duel Band 300/300Mbps (no help).

YouTube and Hulu work pretty good through the computer (wired), and WiFi to my netbook. (Actually the netbook worked just fine b/4 I upgraded the router from single band 150Ghz).  The computer is running Win. 7 and the netbook XP.

So I'm thinking.....the only difference between the ones that work and the ones that don't work are the devices themselves and the OS on the devices.  So....

My sister comes over with her Ipad and we watch a complete move on YouTube with 30 sec of buffering at the beginning then over an hour of uninterrupted move b/4 we get 15 to 30 seconds of buffering again for the last time until movie ends.  But here again it is a different OS.  So....

Neighbor comes over with his Galaxy Tab and girlfriend's Acer Iconia.  Both work like the Ipad did and both have Honeycomb just like my K1.

So have I eliminated everything except my K1?  Anything I have overlooked?  Suggestions?  I have already tried resetting to factory defaults twice and re-downloading YouTube . Why does Youtube not show up in manage Apps so you can remove it?  If I try from the Market it says "This app is incompatible with your Lenovo K1".

All system updats have been run.  YouTube setting is not in high quality.

You tube does not work so great on my K1 either, but it doesn't work so great on my laptop either or any pc in my house. I have dsl also with 1.2Mbit download speed. Areyou using the you tube app or just flash. Flash really slows evrything down so I would try to avoid it. Check your speed from the tablet using this link. http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest Try the mobile test. The flash test doesn't work so good on this tablet. If you do use the flash test, the chicago one is best.

Thanks.  I am using the app.  I tried to remove it and reload it ( thought I had at one point) but seems you can't remove it.  It doesn't even show up in settings/app management so you can see what version the K1 runs.  Wonder why?

Do you use Netflix by any chance?  If so, how does it do on the K1?

Maybe this is another issue. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. When I get on and watch some things it works fine, but when my wife gets on, it always stops halfway for her. Only difference is the website she's watching on.

How many others have this flash video issue?

As you say, so many things can cause disruption on a wi-fi network. Another user on the same network can drain the signal on a single click.

I have no problem with youtube, netflix, crackle or any video for that matter. It did slow start and buffer now and then in an area where we know the signal gets weaker but not in any different way that it would do with one of our laptops.

I have recently watched Limitless on Netflix and A day in the life on Youtube video. No issue whatsoever with my K1. It did not crash or buffer during the entire movies. I am pretty happy with this performance. I have comcast hi speed internet...

Graydog, check this thread out:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Slate-Tablets/K1-Slow-wi-fi-internet/td-p/650175

I can't gurantee it's the same as your case, but worth checking. There could be a few apps or background services (bloatware that came with K1) that are affecting the network performance. And I've found that disconnecting and reconnecting Wifi bumps up the speeds again.

I assume you meant 1Mbps DSL. 1 Gbps is pretty fast...

Graydog, have you tried the latest OTA update : K1_A301_14_14_120109_US ?

A lot of users and myself included are seeing higher throughput.
