Ubuntu Tablet OS on Lenovo K1

2013-02-19, 18:21 PM

Is it too much to ask that this might happen? Is it something I'll be able to do myself?

It's not been released yet so hard to say. My guess won't work, most Likely need latest JB kernel.

There are kind of two separate things going on with regards to Ubuntu on a tablet.  One is that you can, today, run Ubuntu "on top of" your current Android environment (root access required), using the VNC Android app to display the Ubuntu GUI desktop.  This method does not affect your basic Android environment in any way, but it's sort of running Ubuntu in parallel with Android, and as a result is not terribly battery-friendly.  It's also not very touch-optimized. But as a technology demo, it's interesting.

What you probably really want is a native Ubuntu port for the K1, where it is the only operating system, and it's fully touch-optimized.  The problem there is that this Ubuntu announcement is intended to generate interest with "partners" (i.e., hardware vendors) that will do the work of writing the necessary device drivers, integrating, and testing the builds.  Going forward, it's very likely that you will start seeing some "native Ubuntu" phones and tablets.  But it would not be a trivial task to back-port it to the K1, and it's a pretty sure thing that Lenovo won't be doing it.  Still, there might be someone out there who would rise to the challenge.

Thanks, I think my intention more than anything to guage community interest. I would not expect Lenovo to be doing this with an old tablet and yes I realise that it's currently pre-release. I have no interest in running Ubuntu via a VNC Server.

Just to bump this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting

Is anyone willing to work with me on this?
