A1 How to Root Your Device - ROM Version 2643

2012-03-19, 19:06 PM

How to root your A1 with ROM Version 2643.

This translation is based on the original posts on the German Android-Hilfe board.

http://www.android-hilfe.de/lenovo-ideapad-a1-forum/186901-anleitung-clockworkmod-recovery-rooten.html

To root the version 2643 you must load “Clockwork-Recovery”. This method is called “Fake-Flash”, because it does neither overwrite the original bootloader nor does it install anything to your device (with exception of the superuser command, if you do the root procedure). It is like booting a PC from a CD.

More informations about Clockwork-Recovery see :

http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/what-is-clockworkmod-recovery-and-how-to-use-it-on-android-complete-guide/

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1418897

Clockwork-Recovery temporarily install  (Fake-Flash)

1.    Download http://a1.cu2.at/cwm5/update.zip (v5.0.2.7) and http://a1.cu2.at/A1_rooter.zip and copy both files to an
       external SD card
2.    Switch off your device
3.    Hold volume down (-)  key and switch on your device until it will switch off by itself
4.    Hold volume down (-) key and switch on your device, hold Volume(-) key until boot logo appears
After a few seconds Clockwork Recovery will start.

To navigate press volume keys up(+)  and down (-), to select press power button.

Attention : Not all features of Clockwork-Recovery are working on the Lenovo A1 at this time.
Do not try anything else if you do not know what you do!

Root Procedure : This will install the superuser command to your device
1.    Select „install zip from sdcard”
2.    Selecet “choose zip from sdcard”
3.    Select “A1_rooter.zip”
4.    Confirm
5.    After the installation has been completed, reboot your device
6.    Delete both files from your SD-Card.

How to remove Clockwork Recovery :
If you delete file “update.zip” from your SD-Card, Clockwork Recovery won’t be available any longer.

How to unroot your device :
Flash your device with ROM file from Lenovo’s FTP Server

All modifications are at your own risk!

You sir win the Internet!

I've been trying to root my new IdeaPad A1 all day since UPS dropped it off and every method I found utilized SuperOneClick which didn't work at all.

I stumbled across this before I gave up for the night and from what I remembered from rooting my HTC Evo phone this looked similar (not as envasive as rooting my phone).

This worked the first time!

If I should ever meet you, I'm buying you a beer!  Thanks again.

Re: A1 How to Root Your Device - ROM Version 2643

Will I be able to return my system to bog standard Lenovo OS if I decide I don't like/need the rooted setup? What will rooting let me do that I can't now? What happens when a system update is released by Lenovo for the A1? Any help would be appreciated.

I also have an iPhone 3GS, and won't jailbreak it because of the very negative consequences, I hope rooting is not that final a procedure.

Thanks for any help.

Advantages of a rooted device :

1. You can run a lot of usefull apps.

For example :

Droidwall - a firewall, where you can decide which app will have internet access

Titanium Backup - to backup your device. You can  remove unwanted system apps with this app too.

Ad-away - no more ads

Anti Theft apps (not usefull on a device without 3G!)

2. You can modify your system to remove bugs in ROM

For example  :

Geocode Bug (see http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Slate-Tablets/A1-Geocode-Bug-in-Firmware-Solution/m-p/709701)

Change of configurations files (faster GPS fix) and many more

The risks :

Carfully decide, which app you will allow root access.

There are no more risks, because any malware knows the procedure how to root an unrooted device by itself and doing bad things even on unrooted devices.

System update:

In case of a system update (new ROM) you must root your device again.

iPhone 3GS :

I do not like any iPhone/iPad, because I want to know what my device will do and which data will be sent to unknown people. Yes of course some Android apps will do the same, but I can block this on rooted devices (or jailbreak in case of an Apple)

Thanks for the info. If I understand correctly, just do it, and when the system updates, do it again. Seems to be a worthwhile mod.
