Re: New K1 owner unhappy with GPS

OPPS! fixed mine

BEFORE

AFTER

easiest

Did mine a little different, tried several hacks, found couple fixes, couple I'll keep silent about for future use, but this would be easiest way to wipe, time corruption, it does default K1 back to the way it came out of box. So yes it works out of the box, but then we go inside?

  1. 1st;  If settings --> Privacy --> Factory data reset does not fix, try the long way!
  2. 2nd;  Easiest way for layman like me to fix,Download  and revert to K1_A301_02_02_110725_US (zip and xml) on your PC, and rename both to "update" keep extensions.
  3. Transfer to "download" folder via USB that came with K1
  4. Before powering off k1 slate, go to settings, about tablet, system updates, start to check new version, and then power-off  /power back on it should show little droid doing update.  if that don't work; Push the multikey boot; or just Shut it off / turn it back on it should do update.
  5. When the buggy 110725 comes up, go to settings, set up your wireless, , go to about tablet, system updates, start to check new version, .
  6. Will Auto download 110829 lenovo k1 stable OTA, and then power-off restart when prompted.
  7. When it comes back up, and prompts for date and time, CHOOSE SERVER SUPPLIED AUTOMATIC DATE & TIME, & "your" LOCAL
  8. [even if it is fun to do, and looks awesome, do not set your own date and time]!!! this is the bug
  9. That is long - easiest way
  10.  vUpdate your APPS and customize your slate again. Your back and you have GPS offline capable.

First time to sync satellites will take 3 to 4 minutes, and suggest you do this standing outside some what soon after software reload, let it stand for 15-20-30 in open sky above or until it connects to at least 5. After that first sync up and orbital data download collection which some sat guru's say takes 15 minutes, K1 will connect in about 5 seconds then on. So far testing 2 days OK.

Outside: top I collected was 10 sats and 8 in use, Accuracy 30 feet

Inside: Pitiful

BAD: what happens if I don't use the slate outside for 6-months; question is will I have to default it again?

Re: New K1 owner unhappy with GPS

All that fuss about GPS reminds me of the 2009 Archos 5 internet tablet.

Everyone was complaining about it; loong fix time, poor reception, etc...

The fact is those tablet's GPS chips are the very same as those in smartphones. (no big surprise here)

..But that means those are A-GPS chips. The A- stands for "Assisted" (GPS, that is)

The actual assistance is a list of satellites and their position for the next few days.

Normally you'd get this data over 3g or so, but with wifi models, you cant, so either you lock on the satellites with wifi once in a while, or .. you get the very painful choice of letting the thing figure out where it can find a couple suitable satellites. And that might take a while.

Now the particular K1 reception might be a bit low, etc.. but you should expect the same behavior from most wifi-only tablets;

Thanks for that. I was thinking it's an A-GPS as it only works when your connected to wifi. Maybe they can look into what GPS chips where put in these, because if A-GPS chips were put in, then its pointless since these can't get 3G.

Using the GPS with SpeedView App is fun GPS. Copilot is good

Off-line no WiFi, better to shut off Wi-Fi and conserve battery,

mousetag,

am still pending a revert on the K1 from engineering. Also since yours is an A1, appreciate if you can create another thread in the forum so the A1 users could report on this as well if you are having it and I can discuss there too.

Just applied the latest ota 111109_us. Went outside, disabled wireless, enabeled GPS and stood there in the dark for 10 min Google Maps never got a lock. Neither did Latitutde or Navigation. GPS still appears to be broken.

Thanks,
