You'll need a custom recovery first. You can read about it here made specifically for our devices.
For root, here

I've had the 5Ghz wifi issue on my Tab 4 8 Plus for a long time.
Somehow, I fixed it by doing Network settings reset under Settings>More>Network settings reset.
I did several Speedtests and the connection on 5Ghz doesn't drop anymore.

No such luck for me. Are you sure you were connected at 5GHz? I have Google WiFi, and farther away it works on 2.4, but as soon as I get closer it switches to 5, and adios. So still using Airport Express, which also does 5G, but only N band .

I don't have this issue anymore either. Yes, I can verify I'm on 5g

Guess it must be only certain routers then. Others in the forum who have updated router firmware have had luck too.
But running latest Google WiFi (10452.90.45), and it cuts out ASAP when you try to run speed test.

I don't know. I can run speed tests without issues.
As I stated earlier, I had this wifi drop issue also. Until I updated with the 000038 update ( 8704x pls model). It resolved it. Because I had root and had changed the system partition, in order for me to update I had to perform a full wipe. Maybe that had something to do with my success. IDK.

I wonder how much of this is driven by model. Mine is a V. I have had no security update since December (I have confirmed no updates currently available) and V is the only model not scheduled for upgrade to Android 8 in November. Probably the last time I buy a device like this on Amazon.
