B5400 switch between speaker and earphone

2014-02-09, 12:22 PM

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum. :)

One month ago I bought a Lenovo B5400 MB825GE with Windows 8.1 and I'm quite happy with it. The only problem I have got is, that the notebook won't change the audio output - automatically and most of the time even manually -  from the speakers to the headphone, when plugged in.

I can "change" the output in the Windows "Sound" options but the problem here is, that it won't really work. I have got two devices in here, the first is the "Speaker/Headphone" which only represents the speaker. The second is the "Realtek HD Audio 2nd output" which means to be for the headphone. I have changed them to "default device" and to "default communication device" but the output won't change.

E.g.: Somehow (I'm really not sure how) I managed to change the audio output to the headphone. If I plug it out now, the audio output won't change to the speakers even if I change it in the Windows "Sound" option.

I have allready googled a lot and havn't found anything, so I would be thankful for any help.

Have a nice weekend. :)

can you please try to un-install the current sound drivers, after restart let windows install the drivers automatically and check if the issue still persists.

Hello again.

I just tested the problem (on youtube) again and found out, that I can change the audio output manually. However I am not quite happy about how it works. Sometimes it works instantly, sometimes I have to wait 20 to 30 seconds and in both cases pausing the video or reloading it to change the audio output. Sometimes I have to pause and start the video multiple times though.

Thanks in advance.

Hi guys.

Can really nobody help me with my issue? :(

I have already reinstalled the audio driver and updated the BIOS, both didn't solve the problem. I have also tested the problem with multiple earphones, same problem with all of them.

I would be glad about any other ideas.

Thanks for your reply. :)

I uninstalled the Realtek Sound Driver and it's working now. That driver was preinstalled as I bought the notebook and it's the one, I have reinstalled previously (I downloaded it from the official Lenovo website, where it is listed as Sound Driver for the B5400). In the Windows "Sound" options I have now only listed "Speaker", which was previously called "Speaker/Headphone" and the second entry "Realtek HD Audio 2nd output" is - as stated above - deleted now.

So, that was the solution for me, finally. :D

Have a nice weekend. :)

Uninstalling the Realtek driver worked for me too. I did this by going to control-panel > device-manger > sound > realtek(rightclick) > uninstall

Actually you could just go Start button, type realtek, open Realtek HD Audio Manager, click on Device advanced settings in upper right corner and select Classic mode instead of Multi-stream mode. That enables the automatic switch to headphones when connected or back to speakers when headphones are disconnected.

This was the perfect solution for my W540. Wish I had read it before going the driver route (which did not work). Thank you!
