B560 CPU Upgrade

2012-12-10, 3:20 AM

I have an out of warranty B560 with an Intel P6200 that I want to upgrade to a better Socket G1 processor.   I am looking at something like an i3-380M or i5-430M.   Finding a compatible socket CPU is easy, but where can I find a list of compatible processors for the B560 BIOS since it was never updated?

If it has an intel chipset, the chipset spec page with have a link to compatible products Example Mobile Intel® HM55 Express Chipset shows this http://ark.intel.com/products/43183/Intel-BD82HM55-PCH

Re: B560 CPU Upgrade

ishaan,

Thanks for the info, good PDF to bookmark.  I looked thru the B-Series hardware & maintenance manual and see that there are five different motherboard FRUs possible.  Three MBs with the Nvidia GeForce 310 GPU and its various video memory configs and two with just Intel HD graphics.  One of the latter for the B560 and one for the V560.   I opened up my B560 and see that I have MB UMA FRU 11012616 as expected.

I know from past experience the HP Pavilion dv6 laptop has a dependency on the stepping level of particular CPUs that you can upgrade; it will not work with K0 steppings due to a BIOS limitation.   I am concerned to know whether Lenovo has any similar BIOS dependencies on CPU stepping level/microcode errata given five different motherboard FRUs in the field.

Has anyone actually done an i5 processor upgrade for the B560 that can share details on what they went with?

I wanted to share my upgrade experience here in case others search for this.

I successfully upgraded the CPU in the B560 to an Intel i5 460M without problems.   Go to intel.com and run their driver scan to get the latest Intel HD video drivers.

I also was able to upgrade to 8GB of RAM despite the documentation saying the maximum is 4GB.

And finally I installed an ADATA Premium Pro SP900 256GB SSD drive also without incident.

The B560 is now competitive and quite usable to last another few years.

The info on Lenovo website is very inadequate. Bought a CPU but did not realize that the i7 740QM has not onboard Intel HD graphics. The laptop would not post, of course no graphic chip on the motherboard. Going by others the best is i7 640m but to expensive for dual core. I am going cheap so probably i5 560M or i5 540m, should work.
