My daughter has a year old Lenovo G50-80. She has used it for homework and mostly with it plugged in. We recently went on a trip and the laptop will not run on the battery - even though it shows the battery is fully charged.

Hi Mom2Iz ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
You may start removing the ac charger and battery first then press down the power button for 12 seconds.
Check if the battery is hotter than usual and if you can keep the battery out for 2 hours more on room temperature.
Place back the battery and ac charger and observe the battery indicator (page 14) as it should change from a discharge amber to solid white status while plugged in with the ac adapter for 2 hours without turning it on.
Turn on the machine using the Novo button (item2 page 9) instead and choose BIOS setup from the Novo Menu screen. Exit tab would offer loading defaults then save and exit as it would restart and boot on to windows (checking operational charging).
See if same battery condition persist, review the battery report . If the battery is still viable , go to the device manager Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall . Try uninstalling Energy management from the programs and features and see any differences.
Update us how it goes
