Can I upgrade my G560 with a intel core i5 2450M?

2020-09-08, 23:38 PM

I have a Lenovo G560 laptop. It has a Lenovo motherboard (model: 20042), and an Intel Pentium P6200 processor.

I also have a more powerful, Intel Core i5 2450M processor taken out from another old laptop.

If this processor turns out compatible with the G560 laptop and its motherboard, it can provide me with a much needed performance boost.

My only concern is that, if I try and install it, and there are compatibility problems, it might cause electrical damage, or other issues.

Note: The socket of the Pentium P6200 is PGA988, while that of the core i5-2450M is PPGA988. According to this, the socket does seem compatible. The 2 processors also have the same TDP (35 watt).

Is that enough for this upgrade to work on my aforementioned motherboard?

Hi Jikkya,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I believe that you should also consider other things like chipset support of your board and the BIOS whitelist.

Consider to review this discussion for the same upgrade plan.

Intel Pentium P6200 is supported by IntelHM55 while i5-2450M  is Intel HM77.

Among listed compatible CPU for upgrade (HMM page 74), I7-620M would be a better candidate.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Thank you very much for you reply. I appreciate the quick response!

Unfortunately, at the moment I only have the core i5 2450M, since it's what's left from the other laptop.

Perhaps in the future I should consider buying the core i7, or even invest in a new laptop altogether.

However at the moment, the important question though remains, should I take it that this processor will definitely not work, due to lack of chipset support and it's not worth it? Or, should I press my luck and try it anyway, will that be safe on my computer?

Hi Jikkya,

It maybe worth a try since if in case that it is not supported by both chipset and BIOS it will just not POST (power on self test) and shows black screen with lit power led.

It may also proceed but with a prompt indicating probable failure.

Just handle the steps with special care and observe recommended steps as described in the manual making sure that charger and battery is off and the capacitors are discharged (power drained by pressing power for 12 seconds).

Considering the time and effort, I would rather have you search for refurbished cheap I7-620M online going through it with a better chance of upgrade.

Regards
