Does my B50-B70 machine support both UEFI and Legacy BIOS?

2016-09-15, 4:34 AM

How do I access the UEFI feature called "Secure Boot"? I need to disable secure boot because I want to install Linux and have the choice of two OS windows 8.1 and Linux distro. Most newer computer platforms support both UEFI and legacy BIOS booting. Does my machine support both?

Machine details:

B50-70

Model name: 20384

Windows 8.1

I don't have a similar machine to check so I can't tell you exactly where in the BIOS configuration you'd find that setting.  Probably under "security" or similar.

You can get to BIOS by doing a full shutdown (SHIFT + shutdown if Win 8x or 10, just shutdown if Win 7) and then pressing the Novo button.

Several Linux distros can boot in secure mode - Ubuntu for instance - so if you are using one of those it shouldn't be necessary to change the setting.

I haven't installed the linux distro yet.

So I click shutdown and hold down the shift key to get the BIOS? Thanks

No.

You hold SHIFT and click shutdown to make sure the machine is fully shut down and not in the sort-of-hibernation mode that Win 8 and 10 use.  It isn't safe to make BIOS mods or install another OS unless fully shut down.  If you're running Win 7 a simple shut down is sufficient.

Once that is done you power up by pressing the Novo button instead of the power button. That should let you access BIOS.

The only way to say it does is to look at BIOS and find the Boot Options tab, look for it there and see if you can enable / disable / change settings. If not on Boot Options tab it may be elsewhere and you will need to look for it.

Good luck.
