G40-80 Downgrade

Hi all,

I, like everyone else, installed Windows 10 when it was first released. However, I would like to downgrade Windows 10 to Windows 7. But, my laptop was shipped with Windows 8 preinstalled.

What are my options on downgrading and how can I do it? Product keys (don't have it for Win8)!

Your thoughts!

Re: G40-80 Downgrade

Hi sbtm77 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Windows 8 and above versions have the product keys embedded on the chips for OEM machines (preloaded) and would no longer have keys on the microsoft sticker like in WIndows 7 and below.

You need to do a fresh installation of Windows 7 just like a retail version . You need to purchase a product key to use and re install drivers intended for Windows 7 from the support site .

You will also lose the factory reset features if you decide to do a clean installation .

Always best if you also create your own restore media before any change .

Option 1:

For the purpose of using WIndows 7 and still keeping Windows 8 factory restore is to perform installation to replace current WIndows8 C:// drive. Boot on the WIndows 7 installer and install it on the Windows 8 partition without formatting the harddrive.

Option 2: Modify Windows 8 to look more like windows 7  without purchasing any Windows 7 key

Option 3: Change the harddrive and install your Windows version just like a retail version.

Update us how it work best for you.

Regards

Re: G40-80 Downgrade

Thanks @spidey101 for highlighting the options. Seems like I really need to get me a product key if I want Windows 7.

How are my options different if I choose to downgrade to Windows 8?

Re: G40-80 Downgrade

Hi sbtm77 ,

I also had same cases such as yours and still the easiest and most convenient option is number 2.

Mainstream support of Windows 7 would soon be over unlike Windows 8 and when upgraded to Windows 8.1 , is easier to customize to Win7 .

Initially back up all your files and just launch the Factory restore using the Novo button.

This would erase everything and would give you a fresh start .

Continue with all needed updates from Windows until it offer Win 8.1 and then proceed with the customizations .

Links here and here.

To launch One Key Recovery /factory restore, turn off the pc and use the Novo key (item 2 page 9) to turn on.

Novo Menu would offer One Key recovery (page 23) from initial back up to restore to factory image.

What I did with another case is we just swap a harddrive from an old Windows 7 laptop .

Take time to review your option and pick which is more convenient from your end.

Regards
