G480 Win 8.1 can only connect through ethernet

2014-09-23, 23:17 PM

I've been trying to get a solution elsewhere but have found none. I recently bought and installed a TP Link router since the last one was failing often on every device in the house. After installing this one, I found that I can only connect to it through Ethernet, because WiFi connection shows only "Limited" and doesn't even allow me into the configuration page (192.168.0.1). Every other device in the house can connect to it with no problems, and with excellent speed and quality of connection, please help.

hi Grapho,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

After connecting to Wireless Access Point, can you open a command prompt and type ipconfig then check if you're getting a valid IPv4 address (it should say 192.168.0.xxx or 192.168.1.xxx).

If you're getting a 169.254.xxx.xxx IP address then you're getting a DHCP failover (APIPA) on the WLAN. Try to uninstall the wireless adapter from the Device Manager and do a Scan for hardware changes to refresh the device. When finished, run a command prompt as administrator, type the following commands and reboot:

netsh int ip reset

netsh winsock reset

If the problem remains, you may want to check the articles below for resolution:

TP-LInk [FAQ ID: 138]
TP-LInk [FAQ ID: 84]
TP-LInk [FAQ ID: 89]

Regards

I get a valid ip address. I have upgraded the firmware of the router and uninstalled the wireless adapter and it still didn't work.

Already done that too. I've been on some other forums and so far nobody can give me a solution, so I thought to come to the Lenovo forums to see if there was something they were missing. So far I have tried to alter the DHCP settings, upgrade the router firmware, upgrade the drivers, delete the wireless profiles, disabling the AV protection, etc. with no luck.

I'm beginning to think Windows 8.1 is the issue, as every other device in the house can connect with no problem, the only difference being that my computer runs on W8.1. Don't think it's an adapter problem as the adapter still works with every other router I've tried. I probably will try to rule that out by booting into a live usb of a Linux distro or something.

I just booted into a live kali linux usb, and the WiFi connection works properly. What could the problem be, then? Considering finally getting rid of the hassle that is windows 8.1 and going for Win7 or Ubuntu, for a change.

hi Grapho,

Just to check, if you boot in Safe Mode with Networking, are you able to get a working wireless connection (ie. ping or browse websites, access the router gateway, etc.) ?

If the wireless connection works fine on Safe Mode with Networking, try to perform a clean boot to isolate any possibility of a third party service/app that might be conflicting with the Wi-Fi connection.  Otherwise, can you please provide the wireless adapter and its driver (found on the device manager)..

Regards
