G485 - Upgrade RAM and HDD

The G485 that I bought years ago has AMD E1-1200 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 1.40 GHz processor. I just want to know if upgrading its RAM from 2 GB to 8 GB and HDD from 500 GB to 1TB will increase its performance. I currently use my laptop for programming and Photoshop.

Re: G485 - Upgrade RAM and HDD

Hi msEE,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

For programming and especially Photoshop, increasing the RAM to 8 GB would definitely improve performance.

Knowing how big the files it uses would demand bigger capacity storage although performance would be the same with 1 TB drive instead of the speed offered by SSD.

You can review this discussion for your potential upgrade as well as crucial scanner if needed for verification.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Re: G485 - Upgrade RAM and HDD

If I ever buy a 500 GB SSD, is it okay if I just use the HDD as an external or the other way around?

Re: G485 - Upgrade RAM and HDD

Hi msEE,

It may depend on how you work on your files.

SSD are fast but have limited spaces. HDD is slower but would offer more capacity.

Personally, when I work on specific projects that I would access every now and then are kept on the SSD.

Those long-term files that I only open once in a while are stored in the HDD.

Another factor is if you need to move your files from one machine to another (desktop to a laptop on fieldwork).

Here is where a portable external SSD comes in handy.

Regards

Re: G485 - Upgrade RAM and HDD

Yep. SSDs are expensive. I think I'll just stick to my HDD for now.

Thank you for answering. You helped me so much Smiley Happy
