Re: G50-45 Processor and RAM upgrade?

2017-02-11, 4:02 AM

Sorry to chimney in on this old thread but I too have the same processor setup along with the 6gb ram and would like to upgrade my ram to the G. Skill Ripjaws DDR3L 1600mhz but it has a CL9 and was wondering if the computer will accept that Cas Latency of 9-9-9-28 before I commit to buying them (2x8gb) 16gb total.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I also have questions like user before me. And in addition, if i put two sticks of ram well they work in dual channel or not? Thank you.

Usually the timing on the RAM is not too picky, the speed and power level (L = Low Power) are what ususally determines whether or not it will work.

Good luck.

For dual channel to work it needs to be supported by the system board, in specific the supporting chipset that is on the system board, and the included memory controller.  If all of this does support dual channel (most do) then you need to supply the system with two identical sticks (Matched Pair) for best performance.  You can either buy  them individually or in a "kit" form...  I have usually found the "kit" to work more predicably, but only when the seller sends out two sticks that are close but not identical.

Good luck.

Disculpe tengo una pregunta, que caracteristicas tiene la memoria RAM de esta maquina??

lo que pasa es que yo tambien quiero ponerle 16gb pero no se que caracteristicas debo de buscar en la memoria ram que le pondre

English translation.....

Excuse me I have a question, what features does the RAM of this machine have?

what happens is that I also want to put 16gb but I do not know what features should look in the ram that I will put

Re: G50-45 Processor and RAM upgrade?

Since these were not answered, and I've "found" the answers, I'd like to provide them, so others can find this info.  :)

This machine, being the G50-45, features the AMD A8-6410 APU with _integrated_ ATI Radeon graphics - R5 M330. (M=Mobile)

I am aware that there are / were, actually, 2 or 3 sliiightly different configurations of G50-45.
Mine came with (4+2) 6Gb RAM (DDR3 1600) installed.

I have, recently, "upgraded" the RAM to a total of 16Gb - a matched pair of 8Gb sticks (Kingston Hyper-X CL9s) of DDR3L 1600.

TO ANSWER THIS Q:

The G50-45 laptop can take UP TO 16Gb TOTAL RAM = 2 x 8Gb SODIMMs.

They should be DDR3 (or DDR3L = lower voltage)... and UP TO 1866 (max approx 933MHz x Double Data Rate).
It is _always better_ to get a "matched pair" package, to make sure memory timings are matched over both.

Seems like we've been using the same laptop..  ;)

As it's been over half a year, maybe you've moved on..?

If not, you might be pleased to know that I have done what you sought to do -- my RAM upgrade is a Kingston Hyper-X matched pair of 8Gb DDR3L 1600 CL9s with the same timings (9-9-9-28); and things are working fine so far.  I've yet to test them in games -- Elite: Dangerous (Horizons), Empyrion - Galactic Survival, and No Man's Sky -- but I expect I'll report separately on these.

I hope you went ahead and did the 16Gb upggrade back then; I've heard that RAM prices have been going up lately...

Hi there.

Same answer for you, then, as above: 2 x 8Gb will take the G50-45 to its maximum 16Gb.  :D

Must be DDR3 or DDR3L (Lower voltage = less heat, lower power draw), and max 1866. ;)

Unfortunately, the G50-45's architecture DOES NOT provide a Dual Channel mode -- as I found out belatedly, since I was HOPING to "take advantage" of that possibility, which is why I stuck with 1600s and not 1866s instead!  >_<
(.. but watch Linus Tech Tips re RAM clock speeds etc; 1600s with these timings are better than 1866s with worse timings.)

My system is the A8-6410, not the E1 version of G50-45, so I can only speak "from experience" about the A8 system, but I might GUESS that the E1 system would similarly NOT have Dual Channel memory mode..

CPU-Z (free utility) reports mine's working only in Single Channel; further investigation online suggests this is normal, and not changeable / adjustable (I looked into the UEFI/BIOS as well - no option there).  But they're registering full 800MHz speeds (Double Data Rate makes them 1600s) with memory timings as advertised, so I can say that Kingston made a solid, honest sale.

Game testing 16Gb to come . . . (A8-6410 with just 6Gb has run Elite easily, Empyrion decently, and NMS - not. LOL)

Since the processor is soldered to the board, can it be upgraded? And, does it have to be in the same family(A6 to A6 or A8 to A8) or can it be up upgraded to another family(A6 to A8 or A8 to A10)?

Perhaps someone with Lenovo can answer this?

"someone with " _has not_ answered this, allow me to take a stab at it --

The G50-45's AMD APU is seated in a FT3b socket, which really only came out for 2 APUs-- Kabini (& Temash) and Beema (& Mullins), the latter being the (better, stronger) A8-6410.  You'll see from the linked site (just above) that AMD moved on to FP4..

To "upgrade" the APU would definitely require "de-soldering", but then you'd have to possibly do extra research into what other SOCKET architectures might be shoe-horned AND jury-rigged into place, plus making sure what connections go where in case there's any significant changes in the I/O pins (I've not looked into it, myself)...

For the cost of possibly ruining a decently-working laptop, you'd be better off saving yourself the hassle n heartache, and just stumping up for a replacement!  ;)
Try "refurbished"; 2nd-hand machines are more affordable, and (depending where you get it from) may also come with a limited warranty, or even a guarantee.  :D
