Re: G50-45 Virtualization

2014-10-11, 11:31 AM

It would be interesting to know if a bios upgrade could re-enable the virtualization option.

Has someone tried to upgrade the bios ?

I use only linux so it's difficult for me to updgrade the bios (the program requires Windows).

This is the link for the BIOS updater for Windows:

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/g50-45-notebook-lenovo/downloads/DS100823

If someone tries it, please let us know if the virtualization option is present in the new BIOS.

Thanks, bye.

I think that a bios change could enable the virt istruction that seems disabled. Currently i can't use guest virtual images based on 64bit architecture.
The cpu support vm istructions ...
I'm waiting to have a response from anyone ... maybe we must start up a campaign to public this behaviour of lenovo?

A BIOS upgrade only upgrades the software.  It does not change BIOS settings (including virtualization).  I am in communication with someone at Lenovo.  I will let you all know the resolution (if any).

Dear Mr d3bug, what you say could be partially true ... BUT
I think and i'm pretty sure that a bios update could enable the chance to enable the svm flag on memory area stored in the bios that is currently disabled.

The CPU has that feature so it has in hardware: svm is supported by hardware but disabled in bios, that's all.
Now, i'll wait a little bit more for an answer here or an answer to my 1 week old email sent to support ... currently i'm not an happy lenovo customer -.-

As I said, it would update the software (such as enabling the hidden menus, etc), but that does not change your BIOS settings.  That is up to the user once they have the OPTION to do so.

I have been in communication with someone at Lenovo in relation to my BBB Complaint.  The response I received was less than acceptable... Here is the response I received:

"I appreciated your feedback during our last conversation and approached our engineering team as committed.  I was advised the machine you purchased is operating as designed.  The virtualization feature is not included with your machine's configuration."

It is the response I expectected... which boils down to "ha ha... we got your money - too bad".  Lenovo is supposed to pride itself on "Trust and Integrity".  It is apparent from this response that they have none of either.  The artificial limitation imposed by the engineering team was not indicated on the website, the store where purchased, or on the box or in the manual.  As such, Lenovo prides itself on the bait and switch scam.  Not only will I never purchase another Lenovo product, but I will do my best to make sure nobody else gets fooled by them in the future.

So, we can't have a response from lenovo staff , we can't solve this issue without hacking the bios ... this is The lenovo decision?
I'm still waiting an answer from the lenovo support.
I think that this vendor lock that is NOT DECLARED is unfair.
I can't stand this without doing nothing, as customer: I'm pretty angry.
I know that you don't care about that!
