G50-70 RAM Upgrade

Hi,

I have Lenovo G50-70 laptop that has 6GB RAM.

Model Name: 20351

CPU - Intel Core i5 4210U.

Motherboard - Lenovo Lancer 5A2 31900058WIN

I would like to know what is the maximum RAM that is supported by my laptop?  I know that there are 2 slots occupied currently. 4GB in slot1 and 2GB in slot 2. I searched a lot online to get any information on the motherboard stated above with respect to the amount of RAM it can support. But found absolutely none.

When I called customer care to know the maximum RAM supported for my laptop, they told me that it is 8GB. Customer care agent did not sound confident at all.

And, when I looked at the processor information and other forums online, I get the information that my laptop can support upto 16GB RAM. So, am confused now.

Could somebody please help me with a right answer.

Also, please tell me what is the maximum capacity and speed of RAM that I can insert in each slot.

Currently I have PC3-12800(800 MHz), 1.35 V DDR3 modules.

Thanks,

John

Welcome to the Forums John.

As per the datasheet, the maximum Ram upgradation on G50-70 laptop is 16GB  PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz

Update us how it goes.

Re: G50-70 RAM Upgrade

Thanks for the reply, Shashi.

That was very helpful.

However, please clarify the following too. Probably answers this would end up this thread.

May I know if I can put one module of 16 GB in one slot? Does it support?

Or Do I have go for two 8 GB modules, one in each?

Also, please tell me if I have to reuse my 4 GB DDR3 800 MHz RAM and mix it with one 8 GB DDR3 1600 MHz RAM, will the system perform as 12 GB DDR3 at 800 Mhz? or will each perform at its own speed?

Thanks,

John.

Re: G50-70 RAM Upgrade

Sorry for the delayed response John.

Yes. It is very much possible that 16 GB in one slot or two 8 GB modules, one in each will work.

However, yes. You can still reuse 4 GB DDR3 800 MHz RAM and mix it with one 8 GB DDR3 1600 MHz RAM to perform at 800mhz only if RAM make & model are same .Otherwise you might end up with BSOD error.

Update us how it goes.

Re: G50-70 RAM Upgrade

hi shashi...

i was reading your reply to john and you said that if you want to mix the 4GB ram with an 8, make and models have to be same or you'll get the BSOD error...

i didnt get that.. im looking for a kingstone CL11 DDR3L (model valueram) 8GB memory...

if i wanted to mix them then i have to buy two of them or a samsung 12800s ram?

.

thanks

Re: G50-70 RAM Upgrade

Most of the time if you use different speed / sized sticks of memory the computer will default to the lowest speed memory stick, and that may cause the higher speed memory stick to fail, or cause the system to halt (BSOD). It is always best practice to buy memory in matching pairs in both size, speed and power rating to eliminate issues with compatibility and provide best performance.
