G50-80 Hinge broken

2019-06-29, 21:40 PM

I need some help!! I bought this laptop because a lot of people say it’s a durable brand. But the hinge on the right side under the screen broke. I did my research and it turns out to be a VERY common issue among all the people who have Lenovo laptops or this specific one. I called Lenovo support and they don’t want to help me. They said that my warranty is over so there’s nothing they can do, but since a lot of people have this problem shouldn’t there be a recall?

Hinge damage is common in all laptops in general. The only way to avoid it is to buy a laptop with an incredible build (Lenovo Legion Y720) and to be careful.

I can't really tell much from the picture, but is there internal damage or is it just the back plate?

If only the back cover, you can easily purchase a new one and stick it on:

If the damage is more severe, you can just use it as is while you can until you replace the laptop. Or you can go get it fixed somewhere out of pocket.

The reason there's no recall is because this isn't a defect. Hinges WILL break down over time, they are one of the few moving parts in a laptop. The care shown to them is what determines how long that'll be. There are always more variables, so it's not like your care to them are the only thing questioned, but these things happen.

Hope this helps.

Yes, the domage is only external so I will have to buy the cover. It’s a shame that Lenovo doesn’t cover this since it happens often with their laptops. Thanks so much for replaying and for your help!

If you need a "durable" notebook (travel and work?) then I would look to the Thinkpad line as it is much more durable than the Idea line up.

Difference in notebook models are related to the intended use... If you need one that can stand up to punishment look for the "business grade" notebooks and you will not be let down.

If you are needing one that can be run over by a tank and still work - check out the Panasonic "Toughbook" for a good answer.

As notebooks get thinner and lighter - the amount of metal in the build gets smaller and smaller. The hinges are usually the most suspect for damage as they take the brunt of the load during open and close operations. All that flex and torque can cause weakness to show up quickly.

Re: G50-80 Hinge broken

Hi, I am using Lenovo YOGA720 and I am facing the same problem! A while ago, I am using my laptop in tablet mode, and when I was about to flip it back, the screen cracked (yes it cracked and the touch screen is not functioning at all) and it was due to the technical issue of the hinge. Now I am just using tapes to prevent it from further damage.

I bought this laptop last year for its 360 degrees and touch screen function. I just used it for leisure and not even for working purpose. If the "broken hinge" problem is so common for Lenovo, I don't see the reason for Lenovo to continue selling the 360 degree products until they are able to come out with a solution to solve the "fragile" hinge.

My laptop is still under warranty. Could you or anyone please kindly advise for my case, whether Lenovo will cover for the repairing fee? I am not sure how much it is going to cost for the screen.

All I want just to get my laptop fixed. Appreciated, please help.

You will need to contact Lenovo Support via phone to discuss warranty service options that are in your local area.  Charges may be discussed with the agent at the time of your call.

Good luck.
