G500 - Internet issue (not wireless)

2016-09-19, 22:17 PM

Can someone tell me what to do when

  • the Ethernet cable doesn't blink
  • no question marks or exclamation marks show up in the device manager
  • there is network adaptor devices listed in the device manager other than the wireless device (I don't use wi-fi)
  • rebooting in BIOS mode didn't do anything

Thanks

I presume you meant to write  "there is [no] network adaptor devices listed in the device manager other than the wireless device..........

You do not mention what type of system you have, but if the Network Adapter (Ethernet) is built onto the motherboard, it should have an option to Enable/Disable it from within the BIOS, so check there and make sure that it is enabled, or it will not show up in Windows.

  • If it enabled in the BIOS, yet still is not shown in Device Manager, Right Click on Start, select a Command Prompt (admin) and then type:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1   and press Enter..... but Leave the command prompt window open until you complete the steps below to show hidden devices.

  • Open Device Manager and then pull down the View Menu and select Show Hidden Devices,
  • Check under Network Adapters again.. do you see your missing Network Adapter shown now?

If it still does not show, it could be a bad network card or even a card that has become loose, so you may have to consider a USB Network Adapter.

Good Luck

Thanks for that useful response. I use Windows 8.1 on a G500.

In BIOS  I see LAN Wireless Enabled. Is that what you meant ? I don't use wireless though.

I went to the prompt command and exposed the network adaptor hidden devices. Here they are in the attached pic. Is the useful device in the list? What's its name?

Sorry for the late reply, I was out of town.

It appears that you had a Qualcom Atheros network adapter that is currently greyed out and not working.   It could be just a driver issue, so you might try the following

Download the latest Atheros LAN adapter driver from Lenovo for your system using the link below, install and then reboot to test.

Atheros LAN Driver for Windows 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit) – Lenovo G400, G500

https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/alan146w81.exe

If it fails to install, open Device Managter, right clicking on the Qualcom Atheros Qualcomm Atheros AR8172/8176/8178 PCI-E Ethernet Controller in Device Manager (View/Show hidden devices), select Uninstall, and if prompted, check the box to "Delete the driver software for this device".

Reboot and let Windows 8.1 re-detect the LAN Ethernet Adapter again.

Good Luck,

The Atheros LAN Driver is something I tried to install myself to fix the problem. I'm not sure it was there before when Ethernet was working. But that's the only Ethernet LAN device I found for Windows8.1 LAN.

If you or someone else could tell me what is the name of the native G500 Ethernet device driver I would appreciate it.

Thanks again

The Atheros Qualcomm Atheros AR8172/8176/8178 PCI-E ethernet controller is the native G500 ethernet Device for your G500.

If removing the Atheros Qualcomm Atheros AR8172/8176/8178 PCI-E ethernet controller  and rebooting fails to redetect your ethernet card, it could have gone bad.

You might go into the BIOS and try loading its defaults.

  • Tap F2 when you power on the system and choose Setup
  • While inside the BIOS,  press F9 to load Defaults and then press F10 to Save and Exit.
  • Reboot

Check if you'll have a new device under Device Manager.

Unfortunately the ethernet adapter on your system is part of the System Board, so if it cannot be detected, it is most likely bad, so I would suggest you forget about it, and get a USB Network adapter such as this one, which you should be able to find locally in any decent comptuter store too.

USB Network Adapter, Rankie SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter - R1161

Good Luck,
