G505s APU Upgrade failed

2014-05-07, 16:31 PM

Hello,

I'm using a Lenovo G505s 20255 with an AMD A8-4500M apu but I want to upgrade to a more powerful cpu.

Recently I bought an used AMD A10-4600M at ebay but after assambling the apu the computer won't boot, the screen remains

black. Only once the computer boot until the login screen appeared but after I typed a few sings of the password the

keyboard and screen were frozen.

So my questions are:

a) Is the cpu or the integrated gpu of the used AMD A10-4600M broken
b) Does the chipset of the G505s 20255 support the A10-4600M
c) Is the fan of the A8-4500M to weak for an A10-4600M
d) Which apus are supported by the Lenovo G505s 20255

Best Regards,

Robocom

Re: G505s APU Upgrade failed

Hi Robocom (and others),

I successfully upgraded my Lenovo G505s-20255 from an AMD A8-4500m to an AMD A10-5750m ES (Engineering Sample). I don't think the AMD A10-4600m will work, because as far as I know, this model has never been sold with this Trinity A10 APU. Therefore I think the BIOS doesn't support it (although the chipset does).

It's also possible to upgrade to the AMD A8-5550m, but that won't be much of an upgrade from an AMD A8-4500m (which is only marginally slower).

On a side note, the casing of the G505s isn't exactly suitable to dispose the heat that the AMD A10-5750m generates. This is a common issue. When the APU reaches 75c all 4 cores are downclocked to 2.1 GHz and stay there until the temperature drops below 50c. In intensive tasks like gaming, this happens really fast and within the game it will never reach that 50c for the cores to go back to their normal frequency of 2.5-3.5 GHz (3.5 GHz can only be achieved for a short period by max. 2 cores, so normally the APU operates at 3.2 GHz).

Many people complain about this issue, but you should consider that the GPU part of the APU (in case of the AMD A10-5750m we're talking about the AMD Radeon HD 8650g) performs much better when the CPU part is clocked at a lower speed (the AMD Turbo Core features of the APU will then focus more on the GPU than on the CPU). In games and benchmarks this is really noticable. Most modern games (played in the native resolution of 1366x768) are more GPU intensive and therefore perform better when the CPU part is at 2.1 GHz. CPU intensive games and benchmarks will show higher FPS/scores when the CPU operates at its normal frequency of 2.5-3.5 GHz, but that's an issue with the G505s.

If you run the laptop with the maintenance hatch (the hatch to get to the APU, RAM, HDD, etc.) of the G505s removed, you'll see that the APU stays cooler and is able to achieve the normal operating frequency of 2.5 GHz-3.5 GHz most of the time, but that isn't a real solution in my opinion.

Before upgrading your Lenovo G505s, make sure you have the latest BIOS (currently version 3.00). A lot of fan related problems are solved with BIOS updates. Also note that a lot of programs are unable to read the correct temperatures of the CPU and GPU parts of the APU. Please use Open Hardware Monitor for the correct readings.

Best Regards,

Ralf

Re: G505s APU Upgrade failed

There has been only a problem with a used AMD A10-4600M from ebay. I odered a new one and since then my A10-4600M works in my G505s notebook.

One thing I noticed is that the APU's frequency is dropping from 2695 MHz to 1996 MHz after a few seconds instead of the regular 2,3 GHz - 3,2 GHz of the A10-4600M.

The idling temperature with Windows 7 Professional x64 is about 35-45 degrees (Open Hardware Monitor)

~55-70 degrees at surfing the internet

~89-93 degrees at gaming with other applications like Firefox in the background but no shutdown or any other system instability

It seems that Windows 7 x64 is running about 10 degrees cooler than Windows Vista x64 when idling

Before I upgreaded my system was a bit hotter with the A8-4500M APU...
