G505s random cpu throttling!

2014-02-22, 23:13 PM

This is really frustrating, my cpu can't decide what frequency it should be at when I'm running fullscreen applications. It keeps jumping between 900, 1400, and 2500 mhz. No this isn't the charging issue and my bios is 2.05. The other issue I have is that I can't use turbo mode because when the cpu hits 75c, it downclocks to 2000mhz. I'm better off running at 2500mhz, but I can't even do that! This isn't an issue in windowed mode though so it must be some wonky software issue. I'm using windows 8, not 8.1, I've deleted most of the shovel ware and I haven't instaled anything I think would cause this. It didn't always do this. This problem started on day two. I know the laptop's fine, I really like it, but I just can't stand this crap. Anyway, please help me out of you know anything about this issue. Even if you don't know, just tell me how your g505s runs and how hot it gets so I can know if there's something actually wrong with mine.

Okay I guess it's happening in windows too. It's different for every game. It'll stay at 2.5ghz just fine in a stress test, but a game that hardly uses 50% of the cpu? It just freaks out.

I think there is also a heat issue here. Even after downclocking to 2000mhz, the cpu still hits 74c in bf4, which by the way is being bottlenecked very hard by the slow cpu. Minimum settings 20-30fps. This is very frustrating. I'm about to give up for a bit and blow off some steam playing bf4 on my desktop, high settings 1080p at 60 fps.

Hi Ryan82994,

  Welcome to the forums,

Well you should not worry about the throttling :) btw just to make things clear what CPU do you have under your G505s hood ?

and yea you should not worry about the throttling, I got an i5 which powers my G770 and it keeps jumping from 798-2.30Ghz

I believe in full screen applications your CPU frequency increases depending on the system load you can google up intel speed step technology below is an example of my G770's CPu frequencies

hope this helps

Oh sorry I guess that's an important detail lol.Yeah it's an A10 5750m. I know the clock speed should change dynamically but the problem is that it isn't happening at appropriate times. Heat isn't an issue at 2.5ghz here and I can be staring at a wall watching nothing happen and my clock speeds keep going up and down. This is having a major effect on my framerate.

hmmm regarding the FPS I would suggest you to do a GPU driver update

AMD Video Driver for Windows 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit)

keep me posted :)

I'm having the same issue on a G505s 5750m as well. Frustrating for sure. All my drivers are up to date and I'm on BIOS 2.05. I'm also getting the same FPS as you in BF4. What are you using to monitor your CPU temp? I've noticed a lot of programs don't read AMD mobile processors correctly. Some will read 120C while another one open at the same time will say 35C.

I am using core temp but this is on windows 7 dont try core temp on windows 8/8.1 as it will hang your windows install I would suggest you to try,Moo0 System Monitor - CPU / GPU / Disk Temperature. as I myself have used this on a windows 8 install and it is pretty reliable :)

Re: G505s random cpu throttling!

I've been using a program called Open Hardware Monitor because HW Monitor and AMD Overdrive appear to be wrong. AMD Overdrive says I'm constantly above the thermal margin while gaming, but other programs are saying I'm at 70c. Pretty sure the thermal margin on the a10 5750m is 105c.

30fps on low is kind of what i was initially looking for before I realized AMD was supposed to perform better than intel. It's much better than a g510 with an i5 4200 that you can buy for the same price as this laptop, better than i7's too, but I know this A10 can perform even better than that so it's frustrating. we're paying for performance in exchange for battery life so I want all of it ya know.

Right my AMD overdrive says the same thing. It puts me above the thermal margin while gaming with Argus monitor saying my CPU temp is around 70. I suspect it throttles to stay safely below that 105C. Maybe the thermal margin is the margin you have before CPU throttling, because I highly doubt while playing BF4 we are actually going over 105C.

Re: G505s random cpu throttling!

That might be it. Temps do shoot up rather quickly at 3.2ghz. I wonder if it might actually hit 105c if it didn't throttle. It might be for the best but I'd rather just have better cooling so it could actually use the full speed. I wonder what I could do myself to make it run cooler or if it's possible to stop the throttling and let it run at 80c or 85c or whatever.

Can you provide me with a link to the temp monitoring program you use? It would be best to compare our results with the same program so there isn't variables. My 5750m is capable of 3.5 ghz in turbo, is yours the same? Also in your original post you said "this isn't the charging issue and I'm on BIOS 2.05". I'm aware of the BIOS issue, but what charging issue are you referring to?
