G51-35 upgrades

OK so a few years ago I got my daughter a G51-35 laptop for shcool.  It's been acting quite slow of late, so decided to do some upgrades.  Upped the RAM to 16GB, replaced the hard drive with a Samsung SSD.  Same time I swapped out the wifi card for an Intel AC-9260 model.  After the upgrades I did a clean install of Win 10 Home.  After the install the wifi card was only showing bluetooth as working, and not the Wifi.  Not sure why, some searching beforehand seemed to indicate this card should work. Weird that only the bluetooth worked.  So first question is anyone know why that may not have worked?  Installed all the correct drivers.  2nd question, I decided to swap back in the original wifi card, and in the process definitely screwed up the wires for the antennas.  I am ordering new antennas, and I have done this on other laptops, but any advice on opening up the entire laptop to run the new wires?  Woudl sure love to find a working upgraded wifi card at the same time as well.  I have a NAS at home that I store tons of stuff on, so having all computers at top speed to send and download files would be nice.  Appreciate any help.

Re: G51-35 upgrades

Hi rayjj,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

WLan cards on the model would often times be picky and has to match certain whitelist. Checking with the FRU list (page 77 of the hardware manual) do not show  Intel AC-9260.

Options can be:

PN SW10A11586 WLAN, Cbt BCM43162 1x1AC+BT4.0 PCIE M.2 WLAN V2

PN SW10A11628 WLAN, Ltn NFA345 1x1AC+BT4.0 PCIE M.2 WLAN V2

PN SW10A11648 WLAN, Cbt RTL8821AE 1x1AC+BT4.0 PCIE M.2 WLAN

When replacing parts, it is best to follow the steps described in the hardware manual.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Re: G51-35 upgrades

Thanks for the info. I see more wifi cards listed on the whitelist than just the 3 listed. Too bad none of these have newer bluetooth 5.0. I swapped to newer, more updated cards on both my HP and MSI laptops with ease using the 9260 and getting great speeds.

Re: G51-35 upgrades

Hi rayjj,

From the hardware manual, those three mentioned are AC WLAN for faster access compatible with your model.

This compatibility may be the reason why your Intel AC-9260 card do not work for you on this model.

Regards

Re: G51-35 upgrades

Thanks again! I will report back how it goes. Part should be here on the weekend. Time to rip it all apart to run the new antennas, ugh!
