G510 keyboard problem

2016-05-14, 12:00 PM

G510 running Windows 8.1

On start up, neither the keyboard nor the touchpad respond unless I press over several keys at a time. Then the touchpad works and I can select the virtual on screen keyboard. If I press a key for a long time in word, norepad etc. after 8 or 10 seconds the letter is repeated and still continues to repeat after I release the key. (So obviously sticky).

As It is not my laptop but my daughters, I am not too familiar with the history but she told me it began suddenly in that she was typing a document, left the room for a short while and found the problem on return.

Any ideas? :smileyfrustrated:

Hi

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can try to disable the filter key features initially and see if that work.

Otherwise try to go to the BIOS by turning off then using the Novo button (small button next to power) for the BIOS set up . Here you can test initially the arrow keys and enter , with the letters to test it on security password, (do not save ,just for testing and better yet type a common password just in case. then just press power to turn off.

If the same issue on the BIOS , clearly its mechanical in nature and you can call in tech support for in warranty repair . As long as theres no incident of accidental liquid spills , tech would be able to provide inwarranty repair.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Thanks spidey101, for your reply and suggestions.

I now have a morfe accurate description of the problem.

I have isolated the pressing of multiple keys to only being necessary to press v and spacebar to enable the tracker to function. Even when booting this may be necessary otherwise the laptop might stay at the Lenova image and not boot.

If I plug in an external keyboard (usb) it functions perfectly.

I disconnected and removed the keyboard and the machine boots perfectly and the tracker works immediately.

After reconnecting the keyboard, the pressing of v and spacebar again became necessary.

I had already tried disabling the filter key features and this did not resolve the issue.

I can try your suggestion regarding the BIOS later (when I have reconnected the keyboard).

I am not sure if this laptop is still under warranty.

Hi spanner5511 ,

Greetings.

This most likely best resolved by replacing the keyboard and touchpad.

You may check here for the warranty to avail of in-warranty repair and call in tech support.

Else you may check the hardware manual (page 47) if you have the tools and skill.

For the part number for your keyboard and top cover (to include touchpad if needed) , you may get it from the parts look up page here.

Update us.

Regards

Thanks for your help. It would appear to be that the keyboard is defunct. I will purchase a new one and replace it myself as it is a very simple procedure.

Best regards.

Hi spanner5511 ,

I am confident that you can do the replacement by yourself .

You may utilize the manual for the guide and reference to the screws.

Please feel free to visit our community for your query and likewise sharing ideas with fellow members.

Cheers

My G510 (currently running on Win 10) keeps deleting text and folders/files or typing periods.

I don't why or how but I can somehow manage it by toggling the numlock key.

But as you can I imagine that is frustrating.

Hi esbee21,

Greetings.

You should check for compatibility of your current Windows version specially if you do not have the same issue running it on its original version.

Another thing to consider is mechanical failure of the key so testing an external usb keyboard can help isolate it. If it works on the external, try consider having it checked with your local service center.

Regards

Thanks spidey101, using a USB keyboard now, but I suspect it might be the latest Windows update—every update brings a different issue...

thanks though!
